  1. You know most lumber places will cut the wood up for you with a panel saw right? then all you have to worry about is glue, screws, and holes. Yes, but they don't make angled cuts and this box is wedge shaped (sort of). I can't fit a square box in my trunk because 1) I have a suspension brace that runs from shock tower to shock tower, 2) the amp is mounted under that brace, which is also under the box, and the box's shape allows the box to sit up on top of the brace which is also what it's bolted to. Because of the orientation and shape of the box, with it mounted to the brace it sits nicely under the rear deck and the front of the box is 90 degrees to the trunk floor. I'm not entirely sure if my trunk leaks, I've found water in the tire well and the carpeting was moist underneath when I was drilling. But I have been unable to identify if/where there may be a leak. The amp is sitting up off the trunk floor by rubber feet and the box sits under the rear deck enough that water wouldn't be dripping on it. I also have a rubber mat under the one edge that does sit on the carpet. I wouldn't have anywhere to stick a second port except the sides of the box. the port on this one is on the front. I'll try and get some pictures.
  2. cheaper maybe, but it's too much hassle trying to haul a sheet of MDF around (doesn't fit in my car) then doing all the measuring, cutting, screwing, gluing etc. Especially when I don't have the most accurate of cutting tools. it's more of a hassle than I wanted to deal with or had time for right now, and this box isn't terrible.
  3. Well that's a much better solution..... I still don't like the idea of spending that much on a port, but it's nice and will probably work better so I might pick it up in a couple weeks.
  4. Could the port be extended outside of the box? or does it have to remain internal? If I could extend it externally I could do some creative stuff with it. Would polyfill do anything in terms slowing the air down? I'm also toying with the idea of just sealing the box. I think it's pretty well glued at the seams, the carpeting sucks (used box) but not terrible, so I may just need to seal up the plugs on the rear, and cover the existing port hole up.
  5. Went looking, they didn't have anything appropriate I don't think. The hole itself is 4.5" and the ID of the tube is 4" Problem is the parts express port will cost me $53.46 with shipping. I don't think I will be purchasing that one. Why does Canada always get screwed?
  6. I might be able to pick something like that up at our local surplus store....which carries a bunch of car audio stuff, but it's mostly all crap like Pyle or Pyramid. IIRC I have seen ports there though, they might have the right size for mine.
  7. The port itself is just a cardboard tube. I'm considering replacing it with some 4" PVC or something. Would making the port longer do anything of benefit? or would it need to be larger in diameter? I can't really make the hole bigger but I could maybe add a second port somewhere.
  8. old thread (that's what happens you search ) but the song sounds decent.....the broad aint bad either
  9. First of all, Hello I've read the boards many times, done much looking here, but now I've decided to register and post. Just to give people some background I'm an electromechanical engineering student (30, not a youngin) and have dabbled with car audio a bit in the past. I've built a few boxes, gone through the design work and have a fairly decent understanding of audio/boxes, and a pretty good background in electrical. That being said, it's been a few years since I've dabbled with audio so I'm a bit rusty on ..... probably a lot lol. I've always wanted that truly kick ass system, but life has not taken me down a path of riches, and being a student I'm pretty god damn poor, so recently I caved and picked up a used, prefab, ported, dual 12" speaker box to just get a system in my car so I can finally have some decent sound. I've had the Insignia NS-P2000 sitting around for probably 2 years or more now, and just wanted to use it (I HATE selling stuff that I bought) I got the amp and everything finally installed this past week, and for a budget system I am absolutly amazed at the sound and sound quality of these subwoofers. Especially for only about 500W. I'm running the amp bridged, the speakers are 8Ohm and running in parallel so receiving 250W each. There is almost no T/S params provided by the manufacturer and the product has long since been discontinued. The manual suggest a box of 48.6L presumably for EACH subwoofer. My box is roughly 3 cubic feet, and the port is 4"x9.25". If I'm not mistaken it's tuned to around 30Hz. Here is the problem (finally); At higher volume levels I can hear a chirping of sorts coming from the port, slightly high pitch, sounds kind of like a cat purring. I can stick my arm in the port and it will stop chirping. As I understand it, this sound is possibly the sound of the air moving through the port too fast/port tuned too low????? Is there anyway to correct this easily without pulling the box out and re-working a bunch of stuff, and without changing the tuning of the port? I like it tuned to 30Hz.
