Hey based on your crazy ass box you know a shitload more about subs and what not than me, but I think that could sound completely different if you built ports with more port area if thats possible w/ your setup? I just know that for such a huge box w/ such extremely low port area it prob would sound a little funny. Have you thought about trying some ports that are a little more proportional to the box? Just an idea.
I didn't want to get too carried away with the port building. I'm not that good with building ports, but I'm pretty good at building sealed enclosures. I just learned the hard way. Plus the subs I have don't move that much air and if I build bigger ports the box volume would of dropped. There isn't enough volume to begin with.

Really? I'm surprised to hear that. Why? Do you lose all the SQ with the ports in or what?
It had great sound quality when it was sealed. It was very sloppy when it was ported. My last set up was ported and it had good sound quality. It was worth a try though.

hey dude!!!!! Thats awsome!!! major props :~> iam goin 2 suggest this 2 my buddy that has 8 15's. How big is the difference in sound/output does the 2setups have????
It was louder when it was sealed. The enclosure is just not big enough to be ported with 6-15s. I was just curious to hear what it sounded like if I ported it. Thanks for the compliment. Maybe in the near future I can get new subs and new amps. I found this forum after I built and bought everything. I wonder what subs I'm looking at? haha Thanks Steve!!!

Thats pretty sweet. Which way do you like better?
For these subs, I think sealed sounds better. Maybe ported if I had a 24 cuft enclosure.

I wanted to have a box that can be both sealed and ported at the same time so I came up with this idea. I can have the 8 - 15s sealed or whenever I can take 2 out and have 6-15s ported. The enclosure is about 18-19cuft. The two ports I made are tuned at about 33-34 hz. It sounds pretty decent.

I'm not sure if this would help out but I've used the color pigments that you are talking about. I was taught to use a different color for every layer of fiberglass mat. Its just to let you know where to build up at so you'll know where to start building up the next layer and so on. Usually I'll have 2 or 3 colors and change a color as I'm building up layers. It really helps if you want to perfect the layers on any build. I don't even use them anymore since I'm pretty good at knowing where I left off from the previous layer. There are other applications where you can use the color pigments depending on what you want to use them for.

thanks
i was going to do some nice terminals i have but i got to thinking about it after he bought a ton of RF gear.....this box wont be going in and out constantly or even ever.......there is no reason for terminals in a permanent system. I ran wires out the side where they will be hidden once its installed rather then have terminals visable anywhere. They arent shown because i drilled the holes, test fitted the wire, then pulled it out for carpet. They will of course go right back in no prob.
You're right about not putting any terminals in a permanent system. I drilled holes on the bottom of my enclosure and ran them from there. Also, I used 4 -3" 5/16 Bolts and bolted the enclosure to the chasis. There was no reason for me to take it out and put it back in as well.

Great Job and very clean!!!!!!! I noticed that you didn't make any spots for speaker terminals. Are you going to drill holes on the bottom for speaker wire?

Congrats on winning the 1st System of the Month on SMD. That is one of the best Thunderbird installs I've ever seen and the car itself is one of a kind. Keep up the good work.

Subwoofers With Fuses?
in Subwoofers / Enclosures

I was just looking at the new issue of Car Audio and Electronics and they are having a giveaway. They are giving away a new Boston Acoustics' G3 subwoofer. I noticed that there were 2 fuses in between the speaker terminals. I've heard of fusing tweeters but never subwoofers. Is this a good thing or a bad thing?
