So I went to clear up some vines that were growing on my fence last week. I considered poison ivy so I checked some of the leaves against pics on the internet and it was mostly Virginia Creeper. There was some other stuff in there too but i had on gloves right. So I tore into it...shirtless. I WAS being careful not to actually touch the stuff with skin but it was a fairly large growth in several areas. needless to say there was also a significant amount of posion ivy growing with it. I remember it touching my forearms a little, but like I said, I was being careful. I washed up immediately after I was done and was very carful removeing the gloves, which will be discarded. Two days later - it started. I woke up and my arms itched like crazy. Sent the wife to the store to get poison ivy "stuff". All I can say is that this stuff reacts in some people, me included, in an awful way. My arms are swollen up as if I had a snake bite, complete with oozing clear stuff out of large blisters. The itching is driving me crazy, this is day 5 from the initial rash and day 7 from actual exposure to the plant. I went to the Doc 2 days ago and was diagnosed with a severe allergic reaction. He gave me a shot of steroids and 9 days of follow up pills. I think it's helped a lot but its still extremely itchy. It's all over my arms in a bad way. All over my belly, my chest and a small bit on my legs and even my forehead. Completely my fault but wanted to put this out there for awarenes. Do Not mess with poison ivy or any other vines until you are sure what you are dealing with. Even then take serious precautions: Wear gloves Wear several layers of clothing, boots Duct tape where clothes come together Wear a resperator if you have access to one or at least a dust mask Wear safety goggles or better yet a face shield. They say to wash your clothes immediately, I say trash them! Dispose of the vines in yard waste bags, double bag for added protection. NEVER EVER BURN POISON IVY, the toxin becomes airborn and if inhaled can cause death. Obviosuly I didn't do this but I thought about it and did some research first.
