decent starter system

hey, how much would a decent starter system cost?

i found

i understand starting small and on a budget, but doing it right the first time will save you time money and headaches. with car audio, the usual rule of thumb is you get what you pay for. i doubt you would keep that system for very long. i'd be cautious of any full system (subs, amp, and wiring kit) at a price of less than 300.

to start, i would recommend staying around 500 watts RMS unless you're getting a good deal on more power.

if the amp wiring kit contains anything smaller than 4awg wire, that's a good hint that the amp is crap or they decided to keep it cheap by giving you crap wire, in which case your amp will run like crap too.

before you start searching, read the thread "everything you need to know about car audio". it's very informative and it'll help you see through some of the cheap marketing schemes that you usually see online. also, peak power is a myth. it is an imaginary made up number that companies use to make their amp seem more powerful or make their subs seem like they handle more power.

also, try to avoid pre-fab boxes. every subwoofer is unique, and there is no "universal" box that will sound good for all of them. good (ported) subwoofer boxes need to be tuned specifically to work with the subwoofer(s) that are going to be put in them. there are many people in here that will design you a good box for 5-10 bucks, so ask around. oh, and be sure to use 3/4" MDF for the box.

ask around for good brands, and brands to stay away from. anything you can get from wal-mart is generally not a good buy. brands like sony, mtx, and dual are crap IMO. kicker, rockford fosgate, alpine, sometimes kenwood, and infinity are all pretty good brands for starter systems IMO.

edit: i found this setup online. it looks like a decent "complete" package minus the box. although sometimes i've noticed that these packages usually carry a nice, well known brand to grab your attention, then they pair it with a lower end brand that doesn't sell so well just so they can get rid of it. it's not always true, but i'd recommend building your system piece by piece to ensure you're getting good quality stuff.

that CVR setup that 412 showed you is actually pretty good for a starter system. alls you need is a box and you can find someone on here to design you a box then all you have to do is cut it and glue it together.
