Gains & 0db Test Tones

While I was searching on how to properly set gains I kept seeing different opinions on the test tones. Most said to use 0db reference while others said -3db and -10db and so-forth.

I was also looking for a RTA and FFT programs that would allow me to play a CD directly with the program so I can see things in the audio and measure it as well as testing acoustics and different outputs. In doing this search I came across an interesting article by a Mastering Engineer. I remember after my system was installed the installer told me I need to redo the levels on my Cd's because they were all over the place, this article explains why. It also helps to show why you should always use a 0db test tone in your adjustments.

Might I also suggest to never use any compressed audio file be it like MP3, WMA, AAC, etc. Only use uncompressed files like WAV, AIFF, AU or raw PCM. The compression just strips off too much information and the resulting file may no longer be true, that is why I am looking for those RTA FFT programs to test it.
