Cardboardcat15
Finally! I get to start my build log! First things first. Name: Arthur (Cardboardcat15) Age: 19 Car: 1992 Toyota Corolla DX Equipment Kenwood KFC MP345U headunit AP1500D 2 RE SRx 15" woofers Sealed 3CF box (Prefab D:) Kenwood KFC 5.25's in the dash Rear speaks currently under construction Knu 4g Power & Ground Big 3 in Knu 1/0 Stock 60 amp Alt Stinger Volt meter This was/still is a budget build, so bare with me. I've wanted to start this log for the longest time, but due to lack of money/run-ins with car troubles/lack of motivation/changing of mind, I never got around to doing anything major with the car. I've posted numerous threads about boxes and whatnot but never really went through with my ideas mainly because of a tool issue. Now that I have come into a lump of cash, I have a reason and the funds to actually get things started! Here's the car, and all that is currently in it. And remember! I am new to all woodworking/glassing and pretty much everything that has to do with fabrication/box building. I've only installed my own head unit, I don't know the names of some of the tools I use, and I've only been doing this stuff for about 2 1/2 years. I learned everything from this site (watching builds, asking questions, going through threads) or from YouTube videos. I'm still pretty new, so this is one of my stepping stones to understanding everything car audio and perfecting my skills. Let's start way back, a couple of months ago, when I got my first financial aid refund check that didn't need to go towards replacing a motor. Half of that check went towards a new amplifier. The 4 months before that I had driven around without bass. Soon after the amplifier came, I decided I needed some better wire. A few clicks and a couple of days later, this arrived. Now it was time to replace all of the old power/ground wires and solder some new ring terminals. Old solder job New solder Job Still not great, but a hell of a lot better than the old power wire terminal. Old ground New ground (same place, different wire.) Before the Knu, I was using some shitty Hitron "4 gauge" power wire I picked up from a local shop. Needless to say, the Knu is a tad bit better. The Hitron was OFC, however. Getting all of the wires run for the amp. Fuses and all. Went ahead and installed the bass knob, I love this thing so much. After I redid the amp and wiring, I decided to try and re-solder some new 1/0 and terminals fro my Big 3. I think it came out a bit better than my first job. The old solder job And now, the newer, redder wire. Knu 1/0 is a pain in the ass to terminate. Fucking strand count. Oh well, better to have too much than not enough I suppose. My Channel on YouTube. Watch the bass
Change your power and ground cable to 1/0 gauge, 4 gauge cant transport what your amp need. 4 gauge max 98 amps, 1500 watts Audiopipe = around 150 amps. Cardboardcat15
Ok, so I stayed like that for a short while. Seeing as how I exhausted my funds, I couldn't do much more until I got some more cash. Thankfully, a couple of saved paychecks and a birthday meant business. My next plan was to get some proper speakers in my rear deck. So I set my mind on re-doing the entire rear deck of my car. I wanted glassed speaker pods to hold a set of comps, and that is currently what I am working on. So, before I get started, I'm going to need some new tools. A couple more tools and some supplies makes for 2 days well spent. So here is the area I am currently working on. It NEEDED to change. One of the Speaker pods was out because I was down a speaker, and the other was on it's last leg. The speakers pods I had a friend do a loooong time ago, probably about a year and a half. I traded a 2 channel, barely 300 watt MA Audio amp for these. The hot glue started to give under the heat of my rear windshield. Now that I think about it, I would have rather kept the amp. I would be using it right now for my mid's and high's LOL Yikes Now I needed a template to use for cutting my MDF. Ironically, older corollas have this nice little wood/particle board thingy that they use for the rear deck that acts as the perfect template. After a few minutes of pulling, ripping and some swearing, the perfect template was all mine. Everything traced, mocking up trunk arm covers Nice cut, came out great. Perfect fit! When you're working in the Socal summer heat, you take every step necessary to keep cool Well, look what came in the mail just in time? MB Quart Onyx 216 6.5 comp set Now I had the job of cutting out some MDF rings Still new to wood working, but they'll do. Got the fleece all ready (hardly). I couldn't get the folds out of the fleece, so I fixed that with Bondo later. Time to glass! My Channel on YouTube. Cardboardcat15
New day, new post. After leaving the glassed pods in the light for a few hours, they got nice and hard (lol). I resume work the next day (yesterday) and began clearing out the mounting holes and sanding. What a task! Tried using the jigsaw to get the fleece out, I didn't feel safe cutting knowing I could ruin my MDF ring with the slightest movement. Needed a little extra help cutting , grinding and sanding, so a small trip to Lowes made things move a lot faster. Much better! Now, you all probably can't see much, but the pods had some flaws, especially around the folded areas. This required some Bondo LOL. Had to get the big can of Bondo. Taking a break As dusk drew near, I began sanding again. I guess you could say I was on my grind. Haha. (bad pun) And the final product as of right now, as I am typing this last sentence. I'll be picking up some contact cement and carpet tomorrow after some more sanding. Hopefully his will turn out good! My Channel on YouTube.
