measuring amp output

I know that if i want to measure my measure amp out put i will need a clamp meter and a DMM. I know that you are suppose to clamp one of the speaker output wires going to the subwoofer, either the + or - but not both at the same time, to measure the amperage. Then you are suppose to put the DMM on both the + and - speaker output terminals and set your DMM to read voltage. The question I have is, is it safe to leave the subwoofers wired to the amp or do i just disconnect them to be safe??? i am not too sure, but i don't think it would be safe to disconnect and clamp the + speaker wire, while the - wire is still connected to the subs...  :-[

any help with this would be great!

Amp clamp goes on the positive power wire to the amp.

DMM goes to the speaker outputs of the amp. Red goes to + and black goes to -. Set DMM to read AC voltage.

Amps times volts equals watts

Of course I've had people argue with me on that, saying it's not true. So I don't know for a fact about the formula.
