Custom Center console

Has anyone seen or done a custom center console in a Sedan. I would like to do it but i havent pulled the stock one out yet and the gear shift is in the console so it would be hard to work around it. Anyone have ideas about if its possible or if you did it was it rather difficult?

Its not very difficult just tedious & time consuming. An easy way to start is by taking out the stock console, and taping off all areas of the carpet and all electronics you dont want resin on. After that lay down aluminum foil, nice and tight around everything. Next, locate all mounting points and put a dot on the mounting hole. Doing this makes it easier to find them when putting washers (for strength) when laying resin and matting for the form of the bottom.

After you have laid down the resin and matting for the bottom and let cure completely, remove the mold very carefully so not to crack it. At this point you are able to remove and trim the outer areas, as well as drill through the resin at the hole of the washer, and trim around the floor shifter.

After you have trimmed the areas and have the desired shape you want you can start making the sides. I recommend making a basic frame that the sides can form to. Once you have your frame mounted, start looking at clearance issues, the front to back shifter motion, front back side side if manual, and height. If automatic take the handle off, and use a router, cut a notch for the bar to slide back n forth. If manual, remove shifter boot, make a trace of the bracket for the boot, and thats now your ring for mounting.

After clearance problems have been solved, you can roughly layout and do a testfit of the console, and mount certain pieces properly. With doing this test fit mount the base tightly. Now when doing your layout remember the mounting locations when putting your rings for whatever in there areas. You dont what to cover up mounting holes, makes things difficult.

With everything laid out in the form of a skeleton of the console, you may now get ready to wrap the console. Fleece or felt are best. After wrapping tightly making sure no folds or ripples are in the fabric lay down a full coat of resin over the entire console, then start laying down matting over the top making sure to keep the matting smooth when applying resin.

After about 3-4 layers of matting let cure completely overnight. The next day, trim out all areas around the shifter and do some grinding around the base and around other portions of the console and do a test fit, make sure all clearance issues are found and corrected, but there should be none.

After all that its all about finesse work now, duraglass bondo and sand sand sand.

haha well it defiantly does. i see ppl with trucks actually building their consoles but with the curves and whatnot smaller cars have its best to wrap it and lots of resin and matt. Its gonna be tough though because i want to extend it for the back seat too and mount one of the new SA 8s there. ALso with the location of my parking break its gonna be hard to figure out how to cover it but still make it accessible.

The parking break is the same as an automatic shifter, just make sure you have full movement!

To put it short, Would it sound good if i have my speakers in the console including 1 super tweeter in the middle of the dash? But nothing in the doors?

Ive always found that speakers from the outside- in have a better staging. Going from the inside-out will limit the middle response. So it will seem kinda soft in the center of the vehicle.

So I would say doors or kick panels are the best bet.
