get the front of the truck up in the air,when your friend gets back have him or you turn the steering wheel back and forth.look for play in the tierods,or any other steering components.

to see if the balljoints are shot, grab the tire at the 12 and 6 o'clock position and push and pull.you shoud have very little play.looking at you pics,it looks like its time for some new parts.

There are so many different bushings and rubber mounts in a suspension system and any one of them could make a noise. Tracking down which one can get really annoying. Start by greasing them if they have grease fittings. Otherwise you will just have to start replacing stuff.

Most likely it'll be a ball joint. Tie rod is possible, but the sound is different than that of a bad ball joint and with what you described my money is on ball joint.

I'd hit that so fucking hard whoever pulled me out would be King of England.
