SQMonte Posted April 26, 2012 Report Posted April 26, 2012 So I've had my Soundstream Rubicon 2500.1 in my car for a week or two and from day one it's had a weird smell, almost like something inside is burnt or burning. Other than the smell, it works fine, no popping sound when turning off or on, doesn't get hot, pushes my sub nicely and it's undertuned at the moment. Not sure if I just made up that word but undertuned = gain set lower than optimal. This is because I haven't upgraded my power wire and installed the secondary battery yet. So the problem is this, After having the amp in for a week my original alternator goes out this past Friday. The car is a 2004, not bad right? Plan was to install my Singer alt but one of the alt bolts wasn't long enough so I decided to hold off on that while I tried to get the bolt I needed and bought a reman alt from Pep Boys and had it installed Saturday. Car stayed parked the rest of the weekend and Monday I get to and from work, bangin', and decided to stop at the auto parts store....when I came out to leave, car was dead. Had them test the battery and it was at like 11.5v, got the car jumped and they tested it again and the alt wasn't charging the battery. WTF? Two alts killed in 3 days time. So I was able to get the bolt I needed yesterday and went ahead and got my Singer installed, but I disconnected my amp beforehand just in case. So far so good, but is there any defect in the amp that could cause it to kill an alternator? I don't want to kill my Singer but am skurred to hook my amp back up until I find out if it's possible. Power wire is JL Audio 2ga., Big 3 not done yet but it will be done in 0ga. welding cable, as well as the amp power/ground wires. When my car died Monday, I bought a charger and got the battery charged back fully that night and last night, it's resting around 12.6v now, charging at about 14.2v cold, 13.8v warm. So is it not possible for any defect in my amp to kill my alt?
