98' Ford Escort Zx2 - Beginning of a Rebuild

Recommended Posts

Hell yeah dude! Good looking box you got there.

Thanks a lot, it looks good, but the flat black paint scuffs really easily :/ so I'm going to take it to the local paint shop and get them to do a coat of bedliner (leaving the port still white). bedliner will definitely help hide imperfections too

You may know this but I don't know.If your bolts are like the ones in my car you'll need to get the 1/2" drive torx set.Mine on the floor was a pain and broke my hand held bits they had strong epoxy on them. The uppers are just lock tighted and torked at 60 ft lbs.Gotta luv watching for the ups van pull up with goodies.Just better when you know when.

Is that so? they looked like some decently sized torx fasteners, I saw that you steam cleaned your carpet too. Did you rent a steam cleaner or just get someone else to do it? My driver side sun visor was ripped to shit when we bought the car too so I've been looking for a replacement that will fit and match the (prarie tan) interior. I'll keep that in mind when I go for steam cleaning the carpet though, thanks a lot. Any updates on your build log?

Sorry for the late response.Yea the steam cleaning worked ok but I just went and replaced it.I bought a steamer at wal mart to use to steam the new carpet.Ill try to remember where I got it at and post it up for ya.I paid $315 for the new carpet.Just the pics on the trim work.Right now I tore everything out to smooth out the trim pieces .Also to vinyl all the floor parts.Nice sub get up the vids of it pounding.Oh as far as the visor goes if your not comfortable fixin it yourself.A local ulpostery shop can make easy work of it and shouldn't be too much. Here it's only $50-75 depending on the material and also your location.

I'm pretty broke in between paying for school and rent haha, so renting a steam cleaner sounds like a much friendlier option at this point. and as for the visor, I could get a replacement for about $50 online but I want to check out some junk yard to see what they've got there. I'll get some vids up but it's nothing rediculously loud. It was louder when I had my SA-12 in there pounding away. I'll try to get some footage tonight before there is complete darkness. vids to come!!!

I know the feeling after seeing the docs on my heart I'm broke and haven't paid everything yet lol.Hey that's cool if you can rent one go for it. I'll use mine to much to rent.I thought those subs were very loud.Is it the running or not enough power?

It's not enough power for the sub, sub is rated at 600wrms and the amp is only 500wrms :/ well probably has a birth record of about 550wrms but still, the sub isn't getting its maximum potential. Just took some vids!

Wow that's not much diff so it shouldn't be that much differance IMO.But someone who is more knowledgeable than me might be able to explain it better than I can.I don't know that brand to be able to say what's up.For most people who start with a small build start going for more and more. Like my van went from 2 to 4 and then to 10 12" subs after I get this car done.Where dose it end ahhhhhhhhhhhh need more lol.If she would let me get away with it I would put a 15" SMD with next years taxes.

It's a kicker 11DX-500.1... I would rather have gone with another brand but this was a budget build and I worked with what I could afford lol. oh yea? do you have a build log up for this van then? what are you plans for the van, I want to see it. I might get another 12 and put it in there and have it sealed firing towards the cabin, but I'm worried about voltage drop. There was a little voltage drop that was visible in the lights when it was playing in idle so I want to do the big 3 soon. I should be helping a buddy with the big 3 in his trailblazer this weekend, a little first hand experience never hurts.

Nothing wrong with budget builds everyone has one just at difference green level lol.No sir I haven't got a log on it yet.Gotta get this done then I'll start the rebuild. It's a 97 ford e-150 conversion that I'll be running 2 6.5" comps and a 8" mid in each front door.1 set of comps with 8s in the rear for passengers 10 12" subs.If I don't get lazy or screw up the escort I'll be starting the van next week.Yea the big three should help with the power drop. With our escort the 90amp alt wouldn't be able to keep up with with anymore amp draw with lights on.It's borderline on keeping up.Getting more experience is always good even Steve learns everyday. If you know it all it's no fun so comes all the experience with helping and reading.

How much power are you running on that stock alternator? the guys at the shop said I could run at most 600wrms but I'm assuming they weren't putting into account having a battery in the trunk or the big 3

At this moment it is 640 but in a few days or so I'm going to have it clamped to know for sure.I think it's probly close to 680-690.With air on full tilt, lights on and system at non clipped limit at idle it drops. It will drop to 12.8 volts. So for long plays at idle with everything on will lead to dead batt. But no second batt and after the big three my drop is 13.4 so it made a big diff in this car.But I got to get it back in cause my mechanic forgot to put it back in.I like the front bumper clip on your car it has a little more character then hers.

So I was sitting around watching American Restoration on the History Channel.... and I found some motivation to do something a little different to my car :)

Can you guess what will happen next?

I want to get a box designed today to fit 2 12's with port firing into cabin, I'm still unsure on how to do a battery in the trunk.... this is just a little planning for the future
