b-dubs89 Posted June 28, 2012 Report Posted June 28, 2012 i am thinking about my next build and my first instinct says go sealed but i have a second thought about going ported . i have 2 jl13w1 subs and a third 1 on the way . i have had them 2 for a couple years and ran them sealed and was mostly happy with how they performed all around . in this same time i also had an old 15 w0 and decided to build a ported box for it and realized i liked that sub better in a sealed box everything else the same . in the past i have went looking to the manufacture for specs when i am planning a box build but after reading some on smd it doesn't sound like manufacture specs are allways all that for subwoofer box specs . i keep thinking about how many people on this forum will say ported is the best if done right . so my question how do you do a ported box so it is right ? the set up i am looking to run will be 3 jl 13w1 subs at 1.33 ohm on a tma 1000.1 mono amp , my goal is to have the best compromise of sound quality and volume . if you want to give me a box design that is ok , but i am really looking for an answer as to how one would design a ported sub enclosure that sounds good and gets loud .or any sub enclosure for that matter .

diatribe Posted June 30, 2012 Report Posted June 30, 2012 You need to understand the basics of Thiele/Small electromechanical parameters. These are the properties of loudspeakers that enclosure designers use to determine their optimum design. Many people use software that allows you to enter the T/S parameters that gives you volume and tuning recommendations, along with estimated frequency response graphs. Personally, I use BassBox Pro by Harris Tech, but there are many options. Some free and others very pricey. The first book I read on the subject was Vance Dickason's "Loudspeaker Design Cookbook". http://www.amazon.co...n/dp/1882580478 There are quite a few educated people here than can help you more as you start learning.
