Yes, you have to set the oscope up for the signal you're feeding it.

Some scopes have an "auto-tune" button that will set up everything automatically which is helpful if the signal is not too complex and the scope can read it.

Usually just probe the device you're looking at and if the signal on the screen is too big, turn the V/DIV down and vice versa until you can see the signal clearly.

Same with the sec/div. That adjusts the timeframe of the signal. If everything looks all squished together, then adjust that knob and it should spread the signal out.

The key to getting a quality oscope reading is you have a solid ground connection on the probe that is as short as possible. Otherwise you'll pick up a lot of noise which will distort your signal.
