Sonic Electronix lists it as CEA-compliant, meaning it will put out rated power... from what i've read, companies can just buy the CEA sticker and slap it on their product. sundown isn't CEA certified last i checked and all their amps put out more than rated. CEA-2006 Compliant On May 28, 2003, the Consumer Electronics Association published standard CEA-2006, "Testing & Measurement Methods for Mobile Audio Amplifiers." This "voluntary" standard advocates a uniform method for determining an amplifier's RMS power and signal-to-noise ratio. Using 14.4 volts, RMS watts are measured into a 4-ohm impedance load at 1 percent Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) plus noise, at a frequency range (for general purpose amplifiers) of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Signal-to-Noise ratio is measured in weighted absolute decibels (dBA) at a reference of 1 watt into 4 ohms. This applies to both external amplifiers and the amplifiers within in-dash receivers. CEA-2006 allows consumers to be able to compare car amplifiers and receivers on an equal basis. Manufacturers who choose to abide by the new standard are able to stamp their products with the CEA-2006 logo that reads: "Amp Power Standard CEA-2006 Compliant." Amplifier Power for Mobile Electronics, CEA-2006-B Program Description The amplifier power for mobile electronics logo indicates that a car amplifier has been tested to CEA-2006-B, testing and measurement methods for mobile audio amplifiers. The standard requires that the manufacturers report at least three ratings: primary power output in watts, total harmonic distortion plus noise and signal to noise ratio. It's partner mark, the mobile loudspeaker logo, indicates that a car loudspeaker has been tested in accordance with CEA-2031, testing and measurement methods for mobile loudspeaker systems. CEA-2031 defines test procedures for rating the performance and physical size of mobile loudspeakers and requirements for reporting the performance. When consumers use the information found with both logos, they will be able to select mobile loudspeakers with power handling capabilities that are appropriate for the power output characteristics of their mobile amplifiers. Examples of Product Mark Usage Power Output: 30 Watts RMS x 4 Channels at 4 Ohms and 1% THD+N Signal to Noise Ratio: 80 dBA (reference: 1 Watt into 4 Ohms) Dynamic Power: 60 Watts at 4 Ohms Frequency Response: 40 Hz to 18,000 Hz (3dB) Additional Power Output: 35 Watts RMS x 4 Channels at 2 Ohms and 1% THD+N Participation Steps Email CEA's product mark administrator at [email protected] and specify what logo you are interested in obtaining. CEA's administrator will email a PDF version of the agreement with directions on how to fill it out and return it properly. Acquire the latest revision of CEA-2006-A and rate products in accordance with the standard and the license terms. Pay the annual administration fee of $100 per model which caps at $500 for five or more models bearing the logo per calendar year or part thereof. If relevant, provide CEA an annual list of models bearing the logo. This is stuff I pulled from a few sources. So, yes, the companies have to buy the decal, but they have to rate their amplifiers in accordance with the standards.
