Help clamping my alt with Craftsman Professioanl Clamp Meter?

Recommended Posts

I am trying to clamp my stock 80A alternator for max DC current output at idle and at 2000RPM.

However, I think sears sent me a bad meter because it's not displaying the correct Pmax numbers. For some reason my Pmax numbers aren't changing. Maybe I'm using this wrong?

I have the Clamp Meter set to 400A. I set it to Pmax and then clamp it on the positive wire closest to the alt. I play my test tone to provide the load. I go back to check the readings and nothing has changed. What am I doing wrong?

I don't understand why my Pmin number is larger than my Pmax number either.

There's also a - symbol in the Pmax reading does that mean it's negative? There is no - symbol in the Pmin reading.

The reading that I read at idle with no rev is about 15A for this stock 80A alt.

Update: I had my lil bro help me rev the car to 2k rpm while I watched the clamp meter and my readings only went up to 43A DC current.

That's pretty low for a stock 80A Alt?
