sealed sub enclosure question.

Recommended Posts

ok I'm doing my first box build so I have a few noobish questions.

the subs in question are two 10 inch mtx thunder 7000.

thiele specs:

fs: 29.2hz

vas: 1.42 cu ft

xmax: .50 in

qts: .55

qms: 11.49

first off I got an app for my android to calculate my box for me using the thiele(sp?) specs. the problem is it only calculates for one driver. So to make a box for two do I simply double the cubic inches of the box?

example: the software says 3761.2 for my sub. so do I just step it twice to 7522.4 cu in?

does the shape make any difference in sound quality?

I plan on using .75 in mdf would that be suitable?

Do you recommend screws over staples? or does it really matter? I plan on using glue on the seems also.

and should I seal the subs into the box? I plan on running a bead of silicone around the sub holes and letting it set up before mounting the subs to form a "reusable" gasket if you will.

any input would be appreciated. thanks.

Yes, double the volume for two drivers. Shape isn't critical, although some polyfill lining the back and side walls of the cabinet will help reduce standing waves inside the cabinet. Three quarter MDF is sufficient for those speakers and I use 18 gauge brads in assembly. You need to use a good wood glue like Titebond III, which is actually where the strength of the box happens.... the nails/screws are really just there to hold the thing together until the glue dries on a cabinet like you're building. If you have to use screws that's fine but you must pre-drill them in the MDF, otherwise you will split the material and weaken it. Also, keep the fasteners (nails or screws) about two inches from the ends of your workpiece to avoid splitting.

As for silicone, it's not allowed in my shop.... ever. Polyseamseal is a siliconized, water based sealant that sticks to more surfaces than pure silicone and it's far easier to clean up. But don't try to make a gasket with it. You can't get a uniform bead laid down and you run the risk of distorting the frame of the driver when you screw it down to an uneven surface. Quarter inch foam insulation will form a good, reusable gasket and should be installed on the frame of the driver.
