thoughts on box for 2011 Mustang trunk and X-Series 12"

Recommended Posts

What's up everyone, long time reader first time posting here. I am looking to get one Sundown X-Series 12" for my 2011 Mustang and was wondering if I could get some feedback regarding this enclosure:

I know many people don't recommend prefab boxes but it looks like this one could be tuned to match the specs pretty well for the x-series. plus it will fit flush against the back of the trunk so I wouldn't have to deal with the extra cost of getting a custom enclosure made. any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated. my goals are ridiculous, i know. trying to get as much bass possible without adding an excessive amount of weight.

That sounds good but these mustang trunks have some intricacies that make it difficult to fit properly and look decent at the same time. I simply have not developed the box building skills to do it as well as a professional. do you think I would be better off having one custom built or could this box get the job done?

I have a 2010, I know about these trunks weird shapes LOL.

The box doesn't look bad compared to some. Not sure how that port and sub configuration will sound though, with the port exit facing the sub. Gonna be pricey to have a shop build you one. Depending where you live, maybe a member here can help you out.

Depends on what you are shooting for OP. If you want a little boom for the girls, that box will likely work. If you want to compete, you might do better going custom or learning to build your own. All depends on your reason for getting into it imo.

well, my previous set-up was with a single power hx2 12" in a vented enclosure and it sounded really good. but i let an associate turn up the gains on the amp and it ended up blowing the sub. for the past few months i had to revert to using my back up subs which are phoenix gold xenon 10's in a sealed box. they sound ok and it was fine temporarily but i'm really just missing that serious bang.

i was considering going with two sa-12's but then i saw the x-series and figured i may be able to get pretty loud with just one 12" and the right box. i guess there are no shortcuts to success and I should just go ahead and get a proper box built. thanks for the advice.

You may pay more but a properly built and tune box will be worth it in the end.. I had a 12 mtx 9500 in a sledgehammer box and it was loud but didn't sound so good. I looked around for a box but everyone was saying go custom so I did and Now I always go Custom.. That 12 was hitting Lows like a 18" would.. Made me wonder why the hell they sold it with a sledgehammer box..

thanks for the advice everyone. this actually works out better because ideally i'd prefer to have the sub face the cabin. I may even do a rear seat delete. if anyone knows a really good builder in michigan, feel free to pass along their contact info.
