still dont understand

So ive posted on here once or twice and ive been searching online and I still don't understand how port area affects the way the sub(s) plays. More port area vs less port area? I understand port per foot, and someone said theyre the same thing, but playing around on torres I saw that I could keep the port per foot the same but lower and raise the port area so I don't see how that would make them the same. Someone mind explaining or pointing me in a direction with an explanation?
