JBL MS-8

Recommended Posts

Anybody have one or have any experience w it ?

Would like to go completely active but don't have enough experience to set hi, lo, band , and all pass filters .

I have the ms-8 a t15001bdcp , t400.4 ref 800.4 , and a ref 760.4 , 3 sets of t2 components 3 sets of coaxials another 2 sets of mid bass / midrange components . Any suggestions besides getting rid of 2 amps and 8 speakers lol.

Looking for frequency starting points and cut off suggestions or should I start active and just use the supplied passives?

You can still set up hi and low pass filters and where you set your low to hi becomes a band pass. My question is where should I seperate

The frequencies for intended drivers?

Most of my equip will be wired 2 ohm .

I plan on setting subsonic at 20 hz w a 12 db slope and set the low pass at 80-200 I'm running a set of P3D2-12's so I'm thinking 150 low pass. When set up as a 3 way front the options allow for a low to mid xover adj from 100-10khz w up to a 24 db slope a mid to hi xover w same features then a high pass that's adj from 200- 20khz and is recommended that if this is solely a tweeter channel set it 3500hz w a 24 db octave. Then you get a rear or side channel option w none , one ,or two way xover and a center channel depending on what you have chosen that will occupied up to 8 outputs . I'm thinking I have 15 channels of output including sub . And only 7 channels of processing After the sub channel is used which leaves me a 2 fr low to mid , 2 mid to high ,2 hi and 1 center channel . A set of 8's and 6x9 's w no tweets will occupie the low to mid 8 t2 6.5 and 4 T42's will occupie the mid to high and and the 8 tweets that came w the T2 components will run off the high set . Now what to do w the center channel?? I also have a CDT center stage set of silk tweets for the windshield that will tap through CDT's blending modual off the mid to high or the high channel. Or I could dedicate the center to it but would not be in stereo. Btw if you guys aren't looking into CDT for SQ @ descent price check him out.

He has " un " refurbished supposedly scratch and dent area . Don't let him fool you this is brand new stuff that is last years technology and doesn't want to spend the$ on packaging and manuals.

It comes well encased in cardboard and protected and it is brand new w/o blemish. This guy can set up a passive set up in a hour that sounds better then most actives that have been tuned for 100's of hours .

Other things on my mind are what should I set the amps filters @? I do have a PEQ3 so I probly have a t600.2 and a set of T5's components in the works but I'm thinking the ref amps ill set at all pass . I did look at a 3sixty3 and decided after messing w a few DSP's for $400 brand new the MS-8 was the cats ass.

If I do get the 600.2 and the T5's would the passive w RF link be recommend ?????

I really just want to get the most from what I have as far as quality . Pushing it hard isn't really my fancy but I also don't want to have so much sig processing that I begin to use up avail power .

Correct me if I'm wrong but passives do consume power that could be going to the drivers 1 and the filters built into the amps also consume a bit too.

In a perfect world wouldn't you want a DSP doing all the sig processing and the amps doing just what they are supposed to AMPLIFY????

I talked to a RF tech and he told me ideally run balanced from 3sixty3 to t600.2 and then through the passives to the drivers w the 3 sixty set to hi pass 125 the amp between 150-175 and run it through the T5's passive w the RF link plugged in from the crossover to the 3sixty3. And the drivers running off the passive. And all of these "suggestions" were start there and play with it see where you like it . Is all of those filters nessisary . It seems as though he may have just been tryn to customer proof the equipment not to mention that he also said the 3sitxy 3 plugged into th the RF LINK would be doing nothing but once someone at fosgate figures out exactly how that's gonna work there will be a software update that will then

Monitor operating imp , Fq and make adjustments based on the drivers operating performance ?!??!?

Sorry if I made your eyes bleed guys but any input , suggestion and constructive criticism is welcome . I haven't messed w car audio since the PPI art series w the antifreeze cooling systems came out and MB Quart was theeee shit so go easy on me .

One thing I can tell you is I did have 2 Punch 200's the old DSM jobs and a ref 40 or something and if fosgate and soundstream are makin thier stuff half as good as that old stuff was Idk what I'm gonna do w this much power!!!!!

My baddest system then was 12 JL-12w6's on 2 punch 200's and a set of 5 quart coaxial's in the door and a set of altec Lansing 6x9 in a little 90 for Escort w 2 alt and 6 reg car batteries !!!!

Times have certainly changed since I was in the game . A lot of peop are on me about all the speakers ?!?!! It's cool I get it I don't need all those speakers the SQ champ of the world has like 6 speakers total . But I did custom door panels a custom package tray w 6x9,6.5,and 4's in it and each door has 3 6.5",2 4" ,1 8" and 3 tweets from t2 components.

I drew a diagram out here on a scratch piece of paper to accomodate all your speakers.

I wouldn't add anymore speakers. If possible delete and add.

I think to really appreciate the capabilities of the ms8 you may want to go passive on the package tray (if I understand the layout in your car).

Lets start with the doors. Now from all my discussions with on forums and at competitions it has come to a general idea that you want majoirity of your musical information from one specific source i.e. the 4" in a 3-way set up or the 6.5's in a 2-way. See how you kind of built a 4-way set up it is going to be difficult to accurately use the ms8 as you do not have enough channels for your vehicle. unless you utilize each channel as a channel and you forget about left and right. which then tosses out time alignment and so on.

Rule of thumb I use for tuning a 3-way.

<---------80 hz on the sub

60/80 - 180-220 on the mid-bass

220 - 8-5k on the mid

8-5k----------> on the highs

now depending on placements and so on you would work on phasing and slopes. Start off at 24 db across the board and go from there.

I am by far no expert on SQ but, this is my general understanding thus far. Hope that helps.
