GM (buick) 3.8L 3800 series gurus out there?

Recommended Posts

Anyone familiar with this series engine very well?

I'm looking at one where the car drives fine but is making a noise under throttle that as the RPM's increase so does the whine. I almost sounds like an old belt that needs to be replaced but it's not. As you give it throttle the noise gets higher pitched in sound and appears to be coming from where the aly is but my hearing is so bad I cant tell.

Any input? I've heard the 3.8L is almost indestructible.

Rolex you sicken me.

Is it supercharged? Take off the accessory belts and check all the pulleys: idler, tensioner, power steering, alternator, spin them to see if they make scraping noises or check for wobble. If it makes the noise only when your ac is on it could be your ac condenser.

not SC.

Turned ac off and still there. This is on a car i'm looking to buy, just want to make sure its nothing crazy. If its a belt or puller or arm no biggie, I can fix. but I don't want to go into a motor! This is the 1st 3.8L I've ever considered buying.

thanks

try reving the motor by hand at the throttle body and carefully use along screwdriver, one end on the accessory, alt, p/s pump,... and the handle end ON your ear. you will here the same sound through the screwdriver.

mine whines a bit. non s/c.

i've heard some 3800's that whine because of the power steering pump.

but yeah the motors are crazy strong. as long as the intake manifold gaskets have been replaced or are in good shape and not leaking coolant.

the transmissions (4t65 and such) on the other hand are a joke lol.
