dh465 Posted November 24, 2013 Report Posted November 24, 2013 Does a higher signal to noise ratio increase clipping? im not sure if that makes much sense so let me put it in context. I have 2 skar lp750's bridged for 1500w@2ohm - the SNR of this amp is 100db compare this to a cheap amplifier that makes rated power like - lanzar opti 3201D This amp puts out 1500w@2ohms as well however the noise ratio is 80db. Does this mean that a lanzar opti will start to distort when compared to the same power produced by the skar amps? Would this ultimately mean that 1500 watts at 100snr is LOUDER than at a ratio of 80?
Wicks Posted November 24, 2013 Report Posted November 24, 2013 Any amplifier will have a noise floor with a given amount of ambient noise. That noise could be due to the switching power supply or the design of the circuit board. SNR is the ratio of the output signal to the amount of base noise. An SNR of 100dB means that amp has a noise level that is 100dB below the signal output. Therefore the 80dB amp has 20dB more base-level noise then the other. Now will you be able to actually hear the difference is the real question? Maybe in a home audio studio, but any vehicle will have its own noise floor (engine, road, wind, etc) which you not be able to distinguish from the amp noise. Clipping and distortion are two different things entirely from SNR.
