Which amp?

Hey guys,

I wanted to know which amp I should get to replace my current one. Right now I have a single set of kenwood components powered by an alpine amp that delivers 110rms to both speakers and tweeters. I would like to add a 10 inch sub but really don't want to add a second amp because the trunk is already small as is. Is there an amp that can deliver at least 100w to my components and power a decent 10 inch sub as well? I'm pretty new to car audio so please bear with me. I currently have 8 gauge power and ground (I think ill probably have to change these out for 4 guage), one pair of rca, and a remote wire going into the amp, and speaker wires coming out. I would love to avoid changing any wiring besides the power and ground wires.

The alpine PDX-V9 is a 5 channel amp that will put out 100 watts x 4 and then 500 x1 so you could add a sub that could take 500 watts give or take. Not seeing the set up here but you would more than likely have to run another set of RCA's for the sub portion of the amp. Again not 100 sure on that. And yes you would need to upgrade your 8 ga.

Also on a side note here. You can go to woofersetc.com and search amps and look at multi channel amps. There are a lot of companies that make 5 channel so really depends on what you want at the end of the day. I am not trying to promote that site by any means. I go on there from time to time to look at brands and specs. Its easier than going to all the different companies and looking up everything. May save you some time. But as i said i use that site as a reference.

I bought my car with its current set up. It has the stock head unit so i'm not sure that i'll be able to add a second set of rca's. I can take a pic tomorrow if that helps at all. There's not much to it though...

Also why a 5 channel amp when i'm just powering 2 components and a sub? Should't I need a 3 channel?

And the pdx v9 looks like a great choice, couldn't I just use an rca splitter?

hey man, if that's your yellow s2k in the pic, nice ride! if you're only wanting to run 1 amp for your door speakers in the 2 doors and 1 10 I would say you could run (for example only) jl audio, xtant, kicker, and jbl all make a 3 channel amplifier, a few other companies do as well. You could also buy a 4 channel amp, run doors off of 2 channels and bridge the other 2 channels together for the sub. I see you're worried about room. A few companies have come out with very small footprint amplifiers like the rockford fosgate pbr300×1, pbr300×4 and pbr500×1, sound digital makes a mini amp and a couple other companies. If you were into autocross or some other form of racing I would research some of the mini amps, they're small, lite and do pretty dang good from what I've seen. I hope that somewhat helps. just do a little research and looking around, ask people questions about certain amps you've seen you like (don't do a versus thread) and then make a decision. a lot of the time in car audio it's trial and error, buy one thing, figure out you don't like it, you upgrade or just want to go to a different brand. good luck!

You could use a rca splitter. I wouldnt though. You would get better sound going out and replacing your head unit. Yes you are correct and a three channel amp would work. I have never seen one though (not that i know of anyways). You can use a four channel amp, run the components off channel 1/2 and bridge 3/4 for a amp. Just would have to check the specs and power of the amp though to make sure you would give the sub enough power.

I understand, but changing out the factory head unit would really change the flow of the interior of the car, so I want to avoid that. How bad is using a splitter?

Not very but then you cant fade as well, also if you boost the bass off the eq, even though the amp has a crossover set, you will end up putting more bass into your components. Not saying it cant be done but if you want to have a little bit better of an all around system then aftermarket is the way to go or even getting 3sixty.3 in there would help a lot. Like day and night. I understand not wanting to mess the flow up though. its really what you want to do at the end of the day. Guys like me love sound and i am set in my ways to some point and want certain things. At the end of the day its what you want, what sounds good to you and that you are happy with what you have.
