efeerz Posted May 20, 2014 Report Posted May 20, 2014 So say you wanted to run a 6 1/2 and an 8" speaker on each side up front.. the 6 1/2 in the door and the 8 in a kick panel for extra midbass. But the only way you could do this with your current 4 channel amp would be to run them in parallel at 2 ohm (both speakers 4 ohm). Both speakers are the same make and everything just different sizes. So would it be a bad idea to run different size speakers in parallel? Would it sound terrible, bad, or not noticeable?
Travis Retrum Posted May 21, 2014 Report Posted May 21, 2014 Them being different size wouldn't hurt anything but the resistance is what would matter. The amp u are running would have to be capable of 2 ohms per channel for this to work.
wccfan12 Posted May 22, 2014 Report Posted May 22, 2014 If both the speakers are 4 ohm or 8 ohm etc then it will work no problem. Make sure they can handle the same amount of power though, for example if your 8 could handle 100 watts rms but the 6 1/2 only handles 50 watts then you'll be overpowering the 6 1/2 at that point. efeerz Posted May 22, 2014 Author Report Posted May 22, 2014 Yes my amp is 2 ohm stable, 4 ohm speakers. They are really close to the same wattage rating, but anyway the only thing I could think of that might affect the way they sound is, when a speaker is moving up and down the impedance is constantly changing and because they aren't the same exact speaker would it have some sort of effect? I personally think it wouldn't because all it is really is just power draw coming straight from the amp. I just wanted to make sure that two different sized speakers wired in parallel wouldn't effect the sound quality.
