setting my amp up.

I recently purchased a crescendo 1500.1 mono block amp that is powering 1 10" champion pro at 2ohms. I hooked up a multimeter to the output of the amp and with the head unit volume well above what I would ever listen to it at I began to turn up the gain. I was looking for around 42 volts (900 watts at 2 ohms)but came nowhere near even with the gain maxed. When I turned the subwoofer level all the way up it came up to around 37. My question is what does the sub control adjust?,is it a sort of gain? Is it bad to have it cranked even though the voltage is below what the amp is rated to put out? Can this cause clipping? Thanks

A DMM is not the proper tools to set gain on an amp. Oscilloscope or DD1. End discussion.
