2003 Ford Explorer, starting small, working my way up!

Recommended Posts

Starting this build log now, even though I just started and my equipment isn't even close to complete, nor is the work. Certainly not as nice as a lot of you guys builds, but hey, it's a work in progress.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I know it seems like I have a lot more future than present but I have until spring to prepare for comp, so it will come together :)

The Punch Pro 5.25's and bullet tweeters are in my other vehicle, so will be installing them in the rear doors soon! I had my old setup in my 2011 Malibu until the transmission went, so a few things still linger in there that I need. The Hifonics 4ch., that I already paid for, was supposed to be at my door two weeks ago but they ran out of stock and is now on back order. I am giving Sonic a few more days and if I do not have a tracking number, I will get something else!

I have kept track of my progress as I have put this together so I will post some pics of the basic install. For one 15, it gets pretty damn loud! I will be doing the GTMat, and a few other things this weekend so more pics to come then as well!

Here's the vehicle, just put tires on it and washed it. Not bad for being 11 years old in snow country!IMG_0669_zpsdfff25ea.jpg

Put the head unit in. Again, temporary application using a GM install ring lol. I used the correct wiring harness and it came out decent for what I had to work with. Will grab the right install ring from Walmart or somewhere the next time I remember.IMG_0644_zps4e2733e5.jpg

Pillar tweets.... Didn't bother building pods yet, as these are getting replaced with Punch Pro bullets to match the ones I have for the back. This set of tweets are very old and as you can see, this one has a dented cone. Not sure why Photobucket turned the pic sideways and refused to fix it, but you get the jist of the junk.IMG_0730_zps28ea4e30.jpg

That's it for highs right now. My old RF 400w 4ch. that I bought when I was like 17, couldn't take another solder on the circuit so I had to scrap pile it, leaving me with notta. Have the 5.25" Punch Pro's and bullet tweeters for the back doors, once I get them out of the other whip. Getting the 8" Punch Pro mids and already have materials for custom pods on the kick panels, so these combined with the 4ch. amp (if it comes), should do justice. The rear factory 5x7's actually don't sound that bad on the 32w RMS the head unit gives them lol

On to the sub... I had an extreme misconception of brand quality and went and bought a Power Acoustik MOFO 15  . I installed it in same box, used an O-scope to ensure there was no clipping, even lowering the gain slightly lower than the clip point. Broke the sub in for a day past PA's recommended time, on like 1/4 power, going very easy on it. AS SOON as the sub was broke in and I started pushing it, I smelled the coil, turned it down, waited about 5 minutes and when I turned it back up, sounded like a fart! Smoked the coil on less than rated power! So as I do not usually down talk any brands, steer clear of these subs! Luckily, I got an immediate refund from VMInnovations, who have EXCELLENT customer service I might add.

Really too bad, as the sub LOOKED very promising vvv07_zpsa7df81f1.jpg08_zpse0d22850.jpg

So after more careful research and limited options due to my payment method being limited to NewEgg's credit line, I opted for the PowerBass 3XL 152D 15". Has a 3" voice coil, 1000w RMS (way under rated), 562oz motor structure, vented basket, and quite a bit of travel. It's all broke in now and even with the rattle trap it's in, it gets down and dirty!09_zpsb33fb169.jpg10_zpsba2f0a1f.jpg11_zps446d69a2.jpg

Motor structure is sexy as hell IMO :) Wire terminals make wiring it up really easy, no soldering. Almost ran it inverted (like my profile pic), but decided against it later.

Used the same enclosure as I built for the PA, just changing the tuning a little bit. Both subs required very similar specs and I was not building ANOTHER box, just to change a few minor dimensions. Box was already 1" MDF but I wanted a thicker baffle and less box flex, without taking up airspace with braces. So I encased the entire box with 1/2" plywood, making it 1.5"thick.14_zps6b8f26cb.jpg

Once I got all of the wood on and the glue set, on to sanding, filling and painting. I used a fiber based putty to fill the scratches and give it that little extra strength. Only did one coat, again temporary box. Covered it with bass coat/clear coat piano black paint. Also figured out a cool way to flare the ports to the bezel using a Dremel. Looks cool and probably improves sound almost as well as a normal flare.16_zpsde22ceca.jpg17_zpsb759e52f.jpg18_zps2004f67a.jpg19_zps04c23db5.jpg20_zps9e8cb97b.jpg

Finished product before sub was installed. Looked good here, the paint sunk into the wood more after a few days and it now don't look as smooth. Overall, i'm happy with it. The sound makes up for the finish not being perfect! :)
