toysareforboys Posted May 6, 2015 Report Posted May 6, 2015 I know mr. SMD tried to test one "to destruction" but he couldn't destroy it. I tried searching for any info on his tests, to see if he tried to run it at 18v, but I came up empty. My car is absolutely horrible to try and upgrade the electrical (2007 Chevy Cobalt SS/SC). Alternator is ECU controlled. Can't drive around here (Ontario) with a check engine light or it won't pass emissions check. No reasonable option for a dual alt kit. Pretty screwed up front. In the trunk I guess I can make options. What my plan was: Get 2 x XSpower D1600 16v batteries Wire each one of them up to one of my cap banks (I've got two 428.5 farad banks at 18.9v max). Wire the caps/batteries IN SERIES to my 100amp at 36v out solar power converter (12v to 36v, 93% efficient) so each battery will see 18v "charging" at 100amps each. I'm a little worried the cap banks will trip the over current protection on the solar converter but if necessary I could run two or three of of the solar converters in parallel to handle the surges. The stock battery will stay in the trunk, all of the car (other than audio) will run off its normal battery and charging voltage/setup. Not sure how long my alternator will survive feeding the solar converter but we'll see. I'm running two Recon 1.6's strapped at 2ohms final. On the spec sheet it says they are good up to 16v but there's no good option to run a 16v setup in my car and have it suck a ton of amps from my 12v side like I'd be able to do with my solar converter at 18v x 2. I'm sure the answer is probably "get some 18v compatible amps" but I'm so in love with these Recon 1.6's. They run flawless at 0.5 ohms (not strapped, lol), put up with crappy electrical (did fine before I got my cap banks, they go into protection at 10 volts in case anyone was wondering), insane value at $450 each. They absolutely THROW THE **** out of my two Sundown 15" Zv4's. I'm just too happy with them to give up on them at this point I appreciate any ideas you have (other than get a new vehicle, lol) or if anyone has tried any of the C2 Audio Recon amps at 18v -Jamie M.
