if the metal was meant to be a brace its not going to be paper thin. the two main braces in the back dash are the braces that support the upper seat back, and the the secondary brace where the rear window meets the trunk lid. Some cars such as hondas have a brace that ties the two together directly in the middle. rule of thumb if you can make it flex by pushing on it with your thumb, its not doing much of anything except preventing your rear package tray from sagging.

That is not true at all

On crown vics if you cut the back deck out you compromise the integrity of the entire rear top of the car...it would be wize if you cut anything out to replace it with METAL of equal or greater strength ... Many big sedans are this way removing the deck will also hurt the integrity of the rear seats which are hung on the rear deck mostly.... With 2 bolts holding them down.
