A few subwoofer questions.

Well just like the Topic Title says, i have a few questions. I plan to make some upgrades here soon, and i had a few questions about a few things.

I already have two 10 inch subs, would upgrading to 12s be that big of a difference even using the same amp? Would this stay true even if i stuck with the same brand and series of sub as my 10s, just 12s? I understand boxes make a difference too and 1 will be built to the new subs specs, this question is just would upgrading from 10s to 12s be worth it and would i be able to tell a difference.

While looking at a few subwoofers, Two in particular...I noticed a few things.

1. Model X is 500 RMS watts while Model Y is 600 watts RMS

2. Model X has a BL that is higher then Model Ys BL.

Now would Model X be a stronger subwoofer even though it is rated for 100 watts less RMS? Or am i missing a few other features here.Im trying to learn more of the t/s side of subwoofers now for this upgrade and i think i have that correct.

If they are the same brand and model only difference is size, I would imagine the magnets to be the same, which when then lead me to believe the voice coil would be the same, so the power handling would be the same, I am guessing the effecientcy is lower however the cone size increase should help your output and over come the added moving mass of the cone. I say the 12" would be louder. especially if you build a box based on the 12" specs.

If i went with the same series subwoofer i have now, just in 12 inch the magnet and vc is the same correct and so is the power ratings. Efficiency actually increases with the jump in size, my 10s now are rated at 85.1 db/w and the 12s rating rises to 88.9 db/w. Now if im correct here i should notice a output difference just in the efficiency difference correct, being that is a increase of over 3db.

in theory yes, you will see a gain by having an increase in cone area, dont put too much weight on product effiency, most of the times its not accurate anyhow.

This is my opinion someone can chime in. but if I had a 2 door car that had a 325hp motor in it and then upgraded to a four door with that same 325hp motor in it do you think my quarter mile time would go up or down? I am speaking about the db measurement 1watt/1 meter test.

Bottom line is the 12" is going to be louder based on the fact it has the ability to produce more swept air vs the cone area of the 10"

piston area usually exceeds all other woofer aspects.... if you are comparing apples to apples

Thanks for your thoughts MADVIBES, im just trying to get more input on the few things i asked about. Reasons for upgrading is 1, vehicle changed and gained more internal volume and 2 the 12s ability to handle the lower end better. If i gain some possible loudness too that is a bonus ya know. I want to make sure this is clear im not looking to compete. This is a daily driver setup. As is nothing is wrong with my subs, and there great..But i know more cone area would help with the increase of internal volume in the vehicle now. And the low end would come out more with 12s i believe...

the lower end output usually is a result of the driver having a heavier cone, the result is a lower fs driver that usually has more output centered around that number. Are you going to run a ported box?

Yes i will be running a ported box, i am currently running the 10s in a ported box also.

you are good, I would run atleast 2 cubes per sub if you like deep bass. Just my opinion, I like the sound of deeply tuned subwoofers.
