New Wireless Router Help

Recommended Posts

So in about a month, my niece and her boyfriend are moving in with us. Right now with Comcast we have a 25/5 connection, upgrading to 75/10.

This is my current router: http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-N600-Wi-Fi-Router-WNDR3400/dp/B0041LYY6K

Modem: http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-SB6121-DOCSIS-Non-Retail-Packaging/dp/B00768SBAU/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1459184624&sr=1-3&keywords=motorola+sb6121

I've had both for several years now ('11-'12?), I believe the modem will be alright, but I'm starting to wonder about the router and if I might be better off upgrading it.

With the addition of two new full time adults, that's going to take my household up to a maximum of 3 streaming devices/DVD players, a playstation, 3 laptops, 4 cell phones, and 3 tablets.

My house is a ~1550 ft2 bi-level, I can get wireless throughout the house but at the edges it starts to get weak/slow to the point I can only connect reliably to the n channel and the b/g is there but useless. Router is in the basement by the ceiling in the middle of the house, no chimney, above the concrete foundation walls. When we upgrade connection, location will be moved to the upstairs at one end of the house.

These are the two I'm currently looking at that seem to have enough features and still be relatively wallet friendly:

What I'm looking for is:

-Would the update be worth it?

-Do the above linked routers look acceptable?

-Are there any suggestions for location/other routers?

This bad boy $49 https://www.ubnt.com/edgemax/edgerouter-x/

or this $179 https://www.ubnt.com/edgemax/edgerouter-poe/

and a 3 pack of these $199 for the 3 pack https://www.ubnt.com/unifi/unifi-ap/

I run the AP's at work and at home... and I just picked up the POE router i linked.

flawless and plenty of coverage

the problem I have with the routers that you can get off the shelf is range and speed on the 5ghz and AC bands.

I have round it way easier to use the Unifi AP's and use the software controller to set them up.

The Unifi stuff is great for someone who has the want to configure something, and the knowledge to troubleshoot if it doesn't work right.

On many occasions my Unifi gear would not show up in the controller or not work as intended and after restart would not allow network connection though. For me, this is no issue. I deal with it and move on. But depending on your tech level, that could be more of a pain than it's work. No to mention it's far more expensive and now necessary for the size of his house and he would have to run cabling for it to work properly. I know they can mesh... But I have yet to get that working in less than ideal situations.

I personally run a Nighthawk x4, http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Nighthawk-AC2350-Smart-Router/dp/B00MRVJY5C

It has been fantastic, the house is 1800sq ft and I can pull wireless outside on the far side of the house at 49mbps down/5mbps up. I pay for 50/7. I would say I'm 100 ft from the router at that point.

Yeah, my modem and wireless router will be upstairs and everything nearby can be wired into that, but unless I purchase a separate modem for downstairs since none of my house is wired for ethernet, only coax for cable.

I've looked at the nighthawk, but for the cost and how many shitty reviews are on it as recent as the last month it makes me kinda leery. Netgear seems to be all over the bad reviews offering help over email, but every reviewer that called netgear support wasn't helped and told they had to pay some $40-230 to get it. It's like 1 in 5 gets a bad one or something.
