Better could mean louder, or it could mean wider bandwidth. With bandpass boxes you can have one of those things, but not both at the same time. It will only get you more output right around the front chamber tuning frequency. You could go from 4.4 cu ft to 6.0 cu ft, but that will only gain you a little over 1 dB, which is pretty much inaudible. As far as reducing the width from 39 to 36 inches, that's fine and long as you increase the depth enough to keep the chamber volumes the same.
