ChampN252 Posted May 19, 2008 Report Posted May 19, 2008 I'm about to buy my bros computer and I'm wondering if anybody has run their computer off an external HD? It may sound weird but he has a nice gaming rig and I want to free up space for better cooling. I also read that the most serious gamers use two HD for gaming. Can I do that with the external and how would that work (setup wise)? Quote 2012 Honda Accord Radio: Pioneer AVH-4200NEX
rusty959 Posted May 19, 2008 Report Posted May 19, 2008 you can run sata outside the case, but even if you could get it to work (im not sure, ive never tried it) I wouldn't even consider usb etc. But yea, just hook up an external drive using sata Quote 2013 Subaru BRZ12" Orion HCCA on AQ 22001967 mustang restoration project: http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/110765-mustang-restoration-build-2011-edition/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/therusty959
Guest Caps Posted May 19, 2008 Report Posted May 19, 2008 you have to set it to boot from the external, but whats the point? Quote
ChampN252 Posted May 19, 2008 Author Report Posted May 19, 2008 (edited) I thought that would be more reliable, cheaper to replace, and run cooler. My folks house stays hot. Edited May 19, 2008 by ChampN252 Quote 2012 Honda Accord Radio: Pioneer AVH-4200NEX
rusty959 Posted May 19, 2008 Report Posted May 19, 2008 It wouldn't change reliability... possibly lower it though due to it being around other objects that creat interferance... you don't often have to replace hard drives, but it would be slightly more expensive to put in (due to needing an external case and an extra cord/plug), and the drive itself should be finewith temp, mine stayes under 30-35 degrees C all day. btw that is in a 5x5 closet that probably gets to 90+ degrees F when im doing my gaming with the door closed... Now your case being cooler... can't tell you that unless I can get more info on your case.
