So I have a buddy from school that is in the process of dropping a 96 Ranger. He has a lot of experience with that sort of thing but not so much with fiberglass and interior work. So I decided I am helping him out.

Each door will house a 6.5" component set. Probably Alpine Type R.

On with the pics

Here is the door panel

Time to start hacking it up...

Made the plexi inserts today, here is a little tutorial

First gather your materials:

DSCN1566.jpg

  • Router and router table
  • Scissors
  • Flush Trim Bit
  • 3M Double Side Sticky Tape
  • Plexi Glass
  • Wooden replica of insert Shape

DSCN1567.jpg

Here is the flush trim router bit, note the bearing on top which rides the curve while the bottom does the cutting

DSCN1568.jpg

Put your double side tape on the template, this allows you to stick the template to the plexi glass thus preventing it from moving.

DSCN1569.jpg

Adjust your height of the router bit in order so that the bearing rides on what you want to copy.

DSCN1570.jpg

Looks good. You will note I left the protective covering on, this is important as it prevent scratches from appearing on the glass. (The blue tape is because the edge was pealing.)

DSCN1571.jpg

Begin cutting the plexi

DSCN1572.jpg

When you are done simply remove burrs with a lite file (If there are even any I had none). And separate the template from the plexi insert

DSCN1573.jpg

Nice clean edge

DSCN1574.jpg

Fits great!

Mounted the rings, here is how to do it perfect...

Added some cardboard for a mounting base...

DSCN1589.jpg

Coil some paper up so it fits inside the rings and tape it

DSCN1590.jpg

DSCN1591.jpg

Now place your ring at the angle you want

DSCN1592.jpg

DSCN1593.jpg

Inscribe a line around the ring, now remove the tape and lay the paper flat

DSCN1594.jpg

Transfer this to another piece as a copy

DSCN1595.jpg

Here you can see they are the same and mirror copies

Measure them out and mount em to the board using hot glue

DSCN1598.jpg

Now mount your rings using hot glue initially, then some CA or super glue
