you should be cool w/out a bigger alt. if you follow Iso's advice, you should be fine. I threw a 15" L7 in a 91 civic powered by a 1600 watt hifonics amp, brutus sereis and it was fine with just an extra battery in the back.

I'm not saying that the stock alt won't last, by "crash" I mean vastly exceed it's maximum output. You stock alt will probably last just fine, (as long as you don't play the system wide open for extended periods of time) you just will have much lower voltage than if you had a bigger alternator, which means the system won't be as loud as it could be.
