I believe that 85 would be switched+12volts, 86 would be ground, 30 is also +12 volts, and 87 is to the amps.

This is actually the correct way to do it. Although you can use 87 and 87a as power input and 30 as output, it defeats the purpose of its design. Using 30 for power input and 87 for output (when control circuit 85 & 86 are energized) is the correct way to do it. 87a will complete the path for current to flow from 30 when the control circuit 85 & 86 are NOT energized.
