When my Astro van (v6) got holes in the muffler from rust and age, it sounded like complete crap. Total Complete Crap.

I was curious what it would sound like without a muffler and the guy at the shop let me crank it up with just the cat- no muffler. It wasn't that loud and he ran a straight pipe instead of the muffler for like no $. If I didn't tell people that there wasn't a muffler, they would have no idea.

Really on to your point- the exhaust system channels the pressurized exhaust gasses out of a single LARGE opening at the end of your exhaust pipe. This single exit point localizes the sound and since it is larger, has a lower tone with less turbulance. Now... if you drill bunches of little holes, there will be lots of little places for the pressure to escape. It will whistle and cause "port noise" for your exhaust. Don't do it! Cut your muffler before you drill holes in it. At least you can put it back if you just cut it. Holes... eh, new muffler.
