Make the enclosure 1.5" thick and much less bracing. I would probably cut down to one or two dowel rods running in each direction. ex, 2 top to bottom, 2 front to back, 2 on each side of the port from side to port wall. Im pretty sure if i ran it at 1.5" thick i would lose a bunch of volume inside the box.
