Porting through the rear deck?

Ok, I want to get this figured out, I hear that if you port throught the rear deck, it will make the bass inside the cabin area louder, now is it just as simple as making a hole in the rear deck, or do you actually need to make a port? If its actually a port, does it need to be the port coming directly from the box, or can you just make a port into the trunk. Also, will doing this affect the tuning of the box at all?
