Maxim Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 I was looking at the iPods on Apple's store and noticed that the headphones Apple makes for the iPod have an impedance of 32 ohms. It kind of struck me how high this number was. I know that most component speakers/tweeters are usually 8 ohms, while subs are usually wired to 2 or 4 ohms (some down to 1 ohm. I've heard of them being wired to .3). Anyway, I was wondering what the output wattage of the amplifier in the iPod is. I've Googled it, checked Apple's site, looked under every rock and I can't find it. Also, I dunno if anyone's willing to test this, but how low of an impedance do you think the iPod's amp can handle? Probably not down to .5 ohms (like I know some people LOVE to run their subs), but would 8 ohms be feasible? It'd be louder for sure. I don't plan on trying to make my own home-made headphones that pump out 150+ dB out of my old 5th gen iPod video. I'm just curious. wtf is lolcats? I'd def get a fat hooker if i had to resort to that kinda thing. I feel like they'd be grateful and work harder. Also its more bang for my buck, more real estate for my dollar if you catch my drift. its like the Costco of streetwalkers. I was hoping for 150 . I was hoping she would let me put it in her butt
Boon Posted November 22, 2009 Report Posted November 22, 2009 Headphones are generally quite high impedance because the windings are so tiny. I scoped my classic Nano a while ago. I think it could swing about 1.4vrms. Not a lot of wattage. And yeah, usually the op-amps in them are stable to some pretty crazy ohm load... in fact many of them will happily power shorted outputs. And 8 ohms wouldn't necessarily be louder... EDIT: My 1st generation Sennheiser HD595's are over 100 ohms. And they get far too loud to listen to with a decent amp behind them... maybe 0.5wrms to each ear, they are insanely loud. 10.x volts fo' life!
