CHINO11550
My box is about 11 cubic feet after displacement... im running 2 fully loaded 18" BTL'z on a ARC 4000SE & i just picked up 2 M4 DD amps so i am going to run one on each sub... so should i make a smaller box for the subs... eventually the BTL'z will be replaced with SMD'z... need some advice guys any input would help Edited March 11, 2010 by CHINO11550 Quote H/U Pioneer deh80prs w/ HRT iStreamer Ipod DACFront stage is active, 4 Morel Elate 6.5" & 8 CDT DRT26 tweetsamp running 4mids, Mosconi Audio 300.2amp running 8tit & alum tweets, Mosconi Audio 200.28 12" Ascendant Audio Chaos. amps 2 Digital Designs M4'zbox is a 4th order band passbatts. 1 XS Power D3400 under hood,6 D3100 in back2 XP 370 amp DC Power alts.MLA module 15+voltsAll in a 97 2door Tahoe LT2010 West Coast Reg. 140-149.9 Bass Race Champ Team Bass Hz
kmalinich
so you're stepping down or up in power? assuming up.. what effect would that have on your box needing to be smaller? that would raise the tuning frequency ... assuming you keep the port length the same. and the SMD woofers are huge.. so they naturally make your box a little smaller.. less air volume... kmalinich
impedence rise is from the voice coil heating up as well... it occurs over time... and i thought a bigger box has more power handling because the woofer needs to move more air out of the port. same reason bigger box with same port length as a smaller box is tuned higher idk.. someone will post on this thread and they will know for sure just wait.. they'll quote me and be like, "this is wrong"

Boon
impedence rise is from the voice coil heating up as well... it occurs over time... and i thought a bigger box has more power handling because the woofer needs to move more air out of the port. same reason bigger box with same port length as a smaller box is tuned higher idk.. someone will post on this thread and they will know for sure just wait.. they'll quote me and be like, "this is wrong" "this is wrong" I just had to. Also... it's wrong. Impedance rise is mostly due to the inductance of the coil. As it moves through the magnetic field of the motor it generates a field opposing the movement which causes impedance to rise. The coils getting hot is part of power compression. A smaller box has higher mechanical power handling because the air behind the sub is less compliant (i.e. there's less space to compress it in) so there is more cone control. Controlling excursion is probably more important than keeping down the heat in the coils. Last of all, a bigger box with the same length port as a smaller one is tuned lower. Sigh... Part of me is like, ok, good try, at least you admitted you didn't really know this stuff. The other half of me is like, why bother posting something that is completely wrong. Maybe I need to start answering more questions I don't actually know the answer to and adding "p.s. this may not be correct" to the bottom. Edited March 11, 2010 by Boon Quote 10.x volts fo' life! loganlovesbass
i think the size will be fine for what you are running. but thats just my opinion. Quote is it bass yet?
