Dash Lights and Brake Lights Not Working?

Recommended Posts

A friend's 1991 buick century has a bit of a problem. his dash lights wont work (but headlights do) and his brake lights dont turn on. fuses are all ok. i figured someone on here might try to help because he doesnt want to pay $90/hr at a shop because he doesnt have the money. could it possibly be a pinched wire or something like that?

I know this seems really obvious, but is check all the wiring (pinched wires, relays, switches, etc). That's probably what the shop would do.

I had the same problem.

It was a fuse. It looked fine, ( which can happen ) so replace them if you haven't because even if it looks ok it might be bad.

Edit:

Some vehicles have more then one fuse box as well.

Did you check for that?

from what i was told he replaced the fuses belonging to the brake lights and any other lighting system. i dont know how it would happen all of a sudden IF it is a pinched wire or a bad wire in a harness. the first thing that popped into my head also was a fuse. if i have access to his car i will throw my multimeter on all the fuses i can find.

It has to be a fuse or a relay, just take a dmm to all fuses and double check them. if you have the original owners manual for the car look for any info on the relays it should tell you which relay is for what items being powered.

when I broke the hazard switch while installing a deck, I just removed the fuse for till the lights stopped blinking. I didn't realize the brake lights did not work.

If you haven't tried already, take fuses out and check for popped ones

i suck men dry...email me for details
