When building a ported box

Recommended Posts

I'm in the process of trying to design a box for my DD 2512 and due to the width of the box I can position the sub in one of 3 spots, where it fires directly off the port wall, halfway off the port wall or not off the port wall at all. Is either location better than the other or does it even matter?

Im trying to picture what you mean. If I understand your question correctly, heres my answer- I wouldnt have it by the port at all because of unloading problems.

Hopefully this will clarify a little

If this is the box layout I go with I can mount the sub on the baffle so the magnet is directly in front of the rear port wall.....or right in the middle of the baffle so half of the sub is in front of the rear port wall and the other half in front of the back wall of the box....or all the way to the left, missing the rear port wall totally. Does your answer stay the same, completely away from the port walls altogether?

I'd have it on the side where the port opening is. I'd put it near the "3/4 square," if you know what I mean.

In this design, the woofer location has minimal effect on sound (As long as your are placing it on the same wall as the port).

But, what is the depth of the woofer, and the depth of the enclosure? There is a general idea that you need to leave a few inches between the woofer and the back section of the enclosure for optimum performance

BTW, Nice Sketchup...

Is there any particular reason why? I'm trying to learn not just where to position it but why to position it there.

Depth of the box is 15", depth of the woofer is about 6.88" so plenty of room there. Thanks for the props on my sketchup skills, I just learned how to do it yesterdayB)

I'd do it there to limit any possibility of unloading (not that there is a ton in the other places). Also, it has been shown to be effective.

I would assume that placing the woofer closer to the port will force more air out of the inside end of the port and limit the possibility of unloading

Youll be utilizing most of what the design have to offer giving the wave more space to complete. hope that makes any since and help u understand it.

that is a nice sketchup design. what u use to come up with dimensions?

I know a lil about everything so dont call me Mr. Know it All.

Makes sense. I'll keep that in mind...still gotta get my design right. Thanks man....I tried using sketchup a long time ago but couldn't figure it out...looked for tutorials and all but never found anything that explained it well enough for me to get a design done so I ditched it. But Alex K posted up a video on how to use it the other day, I just gave it a go yesterday and seems i'm doing a decent job. I use the Torres calculator to come up with my dimensions.
