zayres29 Posted January 17, 2011 Report Posted January 17, 2011 i was browsing the Dc power website and they have multiple lines of alts and they are rated basically rated the same what makes some almost $200 more than others is it just the ability to deal with heat i dont see why one should more expensive than another if they are rated at the same amount of amps Btw that was the first person. Garr Bear Posted January 17, 2011 Report Posted January 17, 2011 It also has to do with the powerband of the alts. For instance, my DC Power alt produces 320amps at ~1,800 engine RPMs, but only 140 amps at idle. Whereas DC's XP series alts will produce at least 200 amps at idle, but peak at only 270 amps. 1995 GMC Jimmy 4dr DC Power 320 amp hairpin alt 2 12" RD Alpha V2s w/ PSI softparts Soundstream XXX6500D RE XXX 6.5 mids and Polk Coaxes MBQ DSC4125 2 1/0 runs 2 DD 2515s Starting new build soon, building two frankenwoofers with the 2515s and Alpha V2s.
zayres29 Posted January 17, 2011 Author Report Posted January 17, 2011 i thought that just had to do with the way they are wound like you could have a 250 amp alt wound to be a low end monster where another 250 alt is all peak perf Btw that was the first person. Guest DC Power Rob Posted January 17, 2011 Report Posted January 17, 2011 Just so there is no confusion... They are all built from different a "chassis", and each is capable of different things. Yes, winding them different will yield different results, but alternators are like engines, the better platform you start with, the better your end results. At say 270 amps, they will have 3 very different curves, and at *that* point, there's no amount of tweaking to make a Pro out work an XP, just not possible.. Take a small block chevy, a standard 350 can make 600-700 HP with a bunch of work, but your pushing it's limits, a Big Block will do it pretty easy, but will make 8-900 hp with the same amount of work. From the ground up, PRO->SP->XP, If you have a domestic car/truck/SUV a Pro or SP will do fine for most people, but on imports or if you wan't the very best, and push it to its absolute limits every day, the XP will walk over anything.. Look at it this way, Camaro SS, Z06 Corvette, F458 Italia Ferrari... Do they all go fast, yeah, but given the choice what would you rather roll in??
