What I don't understand is why it's available to adjust if it just results in clipping if you turn it all the way up. I mean is there any use for that at all? The gain is not an indicator as 0-100% of your amplifiers power. Depending on your pre-out voltage on your head unit, as well as current supplied from your battery bank, "100%" is generally somewhere in between. I mean is there any use for that at all? lol yes its needed. maybe your hu is only .5v preout. you would need to turn the gain most of the way up. if its a 5v preout you might not turn it up much at all. and heres a kicker, if you have 8v preouts you might still clip with the gain all the way down.
