The song is basically directed towards someone that has commited some crime or wronged someone. Then they basically tried to redeem themselves by "getting right with jesus". But they cannot overcome their conscious and basically "chokes" them in the end. I'm not real sure, I didn't really put much thought into my response. Maynard lyrics usually have some kind of double, complicated meaning... Most of them drug-related....
