  1. Not sure what the point is ? Only 1 hr ??? I typically get $25 or $30 an hour for my time. So judging by the fines of $100 and more, that I typically hear about for sound violations, this seems like a great deal for the offenders. Anyway, if it were like 8 hours a day, for 5 days..... But even so, I'd rather listen to Barney and Barry Manilow, than dead silence, in a room with blank walls, for 40 hours. Now that would be pretty brutal ! Fish
  2. How can it be sealed when it has two big circles cut out of the front of it ? dAM... They must be stuped or sumthin ;-) Fish
  3. Okay now, but you have to remember, "I know how big a part of the whole thing the build is"....... and I've already said, I'm comparing two 12"s in an "optimum enclosure" given the max in clean power, to one 12" in an optimum enclosure, also given the max in clean power, which just happens to be all the same power to itself, instead of split between the other two subs. Who is it on this forum who's sig says, "Theirs no Subsititute For Cone Area" ? I think their is some truth to this. I'm well aware that their are about a million variables...... but for the sake of this argument, I was saying "with all things equal" EXCEPT cone area..... Hmmmm.... Fish
  4. Hey hzso, that's a sweet freaking TV ! Your going to love it :-) And 52" too ! Here I am with my dinky little 46".... Urggg... You suck ! :-) Honestly though, it's amazing the size difference between a 46" and a 52"...... it seems like about a foot ! My room mate and Landlord both have a 50" TV.... and if I watch them for 10 minutes, then go back and look at mine, it looks tiny :-( Damnitt ! That does it. I'm going to order my 70" right now ! :-) Enjoy it, Peace, Fish
  5. Here's one for you. This evening during Thankgiving dinner (hope ya'll had a good one..... I'm still freaking stuffed ! :-) I mentioned to a young friend of mine, that I was going to be running two 12"s to start out with. I told him they were kind of in the mid-power range, rated for about 350 to 400wts, and that was exactly what I had to give to them. He immediatly says, "Ah dude, I know this one 'Pro Series' 12" that would have been as loud as both of those together, and your box could have been half the size"..... Hmmmm. No arguing the box size aspect.... Of course with a Supercab, and no rear seats, space is not a real big concern for me anyway. But now, sure, I know of LOTS of pro series subs that can take ALL the power I'll be splitting between my current two subs, and even more ! Lots more ! But would any pro 12" sub, with all of my amps power to it, actually be louder than my two 12" subs, with the power split between them ? Honestly, I don't think so. I know their are all kinds of variables, with the greatest being the box.... But regardless of what subs I ever go with, my box is going to be "spot on" to previously calculated specs, for the particular sub(s) in question.... What do you think ? Fish
  6. Hey Basshead69, I tried to research these subs a little bit last night, but couldn't find much. Even the ones I did find were listed as 4 ohm dual voice coils... which wouldn't work for me, but you say yours are 2 ohm dvc's ? Do they make these same subs in a 2 ohm dvc 15" ? Any place you could suggest to find more info on these subs, plus possibly buy ? Oh, and one more thing; Obviously your into the SPL aspect (which is cool... so am I to a certain degree) but how would you rate these subs in the SQ department ? Thanks, Fish
  7. 490 refresh rate ! Holy shiznit ! I thought you made a typo... But yea' that's what they are saying. The thing is though, I can't really even see a difference in my 60hz refresh rate, and the newer 120's ? So I can't imagine any real benefit of 480. It's kind of like the difference in sound quality of a CD player with .01 % distortion, and another with .001% distortion. The second one is 10 X's cleaner on paper, but the human ear can't detect the difference anyway. And hey, just to reiterate, I really like Plasmas too. Any new, large flat screen, Plasma, or LCD beats the heck out of any old school picture tube. Just splitting hairs between the two though. Peace, Fish
  8. Burnt in images on plasmas "used to be a big concern", but have become really unlikely nowadays, except maybe in extreme cases.... like leaving a video game on pause for days at a time, with the contrast setting cranked up to maximum, and this would still probably only happen, with a cheaper set. .....and remember, I'm an LCD kind of guy. But the facts are the facts. Heck, Plasmas "used to have" a relatively short screen life too (like 5 years of normal use) but that's also a thing of the past. Peace, Fish PS, One thing I don't think I've ranted about during this discussion, is all of the stinking GLARE from plasmas. Two years ago, when I was looking through all of the flat screens at Best Buy, I quickly noticed that if you looked up at the top row of flatscreens (the ones that were tilted down at about a 40 degree angle), while walking down the isle, you would see a perfect reflection of the all of the store front windows... next set, the same, next set, the same, same, same.... and then, bam ! Finally a set with ZERO reflections on it ! That is where the LCD's started :-) Love my LCD.
  9. Very nice. 3.5 cubes ? I'm going to guess 12"s huh ? Those are some BIG numbers there ! Congrats. I've never heard of VFL American Bass subs. Have you used any others in competition ? How do these compare ? Think I'll go research them now. Peace, Fish
  10. Right on. In most cases, guys would like to brag about having an 18 x 24 foot living room, but in this case, your the lucky one ! :-) A 46" will get you by.... but a 52" would not be too big either, and would cover you should you move to a slightly larger place. Peace, Fish PS, I saw a 70" LCD in my Crutchfield catalog today. Of course it said, "Call for price". Yea' sure ! If a guy has to call, he might as well just forget it. He can't afford it :-) LOL I'm guessing about $10K. Think I'll get two. Oh BTW hzsogood, don't even tell me you know that girl in your avatar ! ....or that your boinking it ! I can't even imagine what a guy would have to do, to deserve a girl like that ! {had to do the little link tracing thing to see a larger photo... and holy shiznit ! :-)
  11. SIZE is SOOOO important..... I could go on and spend all kinds of time with a brand new post..... But since I just answered this very same thing over on the F150 forum, please forgive me for copying and pasting.... And again, the best advice I can give you is, click on the link to screen size charts, and don't try to discredit those numbers ! I know from personal experience, it's absolutely accurate ! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I've had my 46" 60hz 1080P JVC LCD for about 2 years now. I absolutely love it. The only problem was, when I bought it, I was watching it from a 9ft viewing distance. Sure, it looked BIG ! .....but because of the 1080P, you were still plenty far enough to not see any pixelation, or jagged edges on anything. ......then, I moved to a much larger place, and my viewing distance suddenly jumped up to about 13 ft. Talk about the "incredible shrinking TV" :-( Sure, a 52" would be better, but honestly a 60" wouldn't be too big. I'm not sure what your viewing distance is, but I bet you would be amazed at what the "optimum size", per viewing distance really is ! I know I was. http://www.cnet.com/1990-7874_1-5108...ag=hdtv;hdtv_l Scroll to the bottom chart for the wide screen...... and don't be too bummed that your 52" will be good for a "maximum" of less than 13ft. You can doubt this, or try to argue it...... but my personal experience has shown this chart to be "absolutely correct" ! What they are basically saying is, any further (or any smaller a screen) than they are recommending here, and you will basically be losing any benefits of HD, because you will be too far away for your eyes to discern the extra detail. {I know I lost a TON of detail going from 9ft to 13ft :-(} My point is: Knowing what I know now, if I were to buy another flatscreen, I'd wait as long, and save as much as I had to, to get as big a screen as I needed, to stay inside of the max viewing distance, listed on this chart. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ LCD vs. plasma. {btw, I'm absolutely rediculous about analyzing, and over-analyzing to 10th degree, large purchases such as a flat screen. I studied them, and hung out on a flat panel TV forum for litterally 6 months before my purchase} LCD pros: *non-glare screen *lighter, and less subject to damage during transport *use about 40% less electricity for equal screen size, and as a dirrect result, tend to put off much less heat. *brighter picture, better for daytime viewing LCD cons: *blacks are not "as black" (not as high of contrast) *cost more than plasmas for equal screen size Anyway, if I had to do it again, I would get another LCD for sure..... However, I wouldn't even consider less than a 60", which would still not be too big for my 13ft viewing distance, but would be acceptable, should I ever move to a place with a greater viewing distance yet. Hope this helps, Peace, Fish
  12. Thank you ISO. This all helps. To be honest, I think where I'm at right now, is that I will get everything installed, along with the Big 3 and my fat battery upgrade. Next, if it seems to be neccessary, I'll upgrade my alternator to as big, and heavy duty as I can afford.... maybe even running a dual setup (stock alt for the truck, and a big bad ass alt for the stereo.... and of course dual alts would do well with dual batts. Finally, if I'm getting bored, I might try to find a REALLY BIG fat capacitor, for a dirt cheap price, like you did, and give it a whirl :-) But definately a last step kind of thing. Peace, Fish
  13. And just to keep the score even...... :-) http://www.articlesbase.com/automotive-art...acitor-449.html Like I said before, somebody buy me one, I'll try it, and let everyone know :-) Peace, Fish
  14. Here's an interesting find: The Truth about Capacitors -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After studying a little history on large 1 Farad capacitors in car audio, you'd be amazed that they even sell at all. How useful are they? What do they really do? Will a Cap 'improve' my sound quality? Will it Prevent my lights from dimming? Will it audibly affect my audio system in any way? Before you get the truth to any of the above questions, chances are, you've probably spent $100 or more on one of these devices. However, let's study a little history regarding this issue. A long time ago, in a land far away, 2 elves...Ok, Richard Clark & Wayne Harris (Carsound magazine and the inventor of DB Drag, respectively) separately came up with a solution to preventing their lights from dimming. WHO WERE THESE GUYZ? As you may know, Richard Clark is one of the founders of autosound2000 Tech Briefs, Carsound magazine, and a published author of the industry of mobile electronics. In SQ competitions, he posted a record of 1234 1st place finishes, and only ended up NOT 1st in his first event. I've heard that he had minor system problems, but judging by his record, he must have corrected it. (evidently, he needed a Capacitor ) Wayne Harris was previously a leader at Rockford Fosgate in their development. Later, in his free time, he created the organization we call DB DRAG. Wayne was the first SQ World Champion from the organization we know as IASCA (International AutoSound Challenge Association). Both of these gurus are both legends, and considered the leading experts in the field. During their competition days, both guyz came up with a way to assist in the prevention of voltage drops. In SQ competitions, the look of your system is actually more important than the sound, and having your lights NOT dim under high playing levels is a competitive advantage. As you may know, amplifiers are made up a bank of little capacitors, resistors, etc. What has been common engineering knowledge is that capacitors store energy, and more or bigger ones assist in balancing the power supply. Wayne came up with the idea of putting several dozen 'little' (approx 100uF) capacitors on a circuit board to 'extend' the power supplies storage. At about the same time, or shortly afterward, Richard came up with the idea of one huge mondo capacitor (I believe it was 800,000uF or 0.8F) to do the job. Eventually, Richard won. The large cylindrical tubes won over the complicated 48 caps strapped to a circuit board. However, what did this really accomplish? Let's start here: WHAT IS A CAPACITOR? Basically, capacitors are an energy storage device. Large, 1 Farad or more capacitors store energy (electrons) between their plates. Capacitors differ from batteries because batteries store energy in the form of chemical energy--and rely on acid and lead plates, as the place of storage. For a more detailed description of a capacitor, go here: http://www.eatel.net/~amptech/elecdisc/caraudio.htm Then on the right hand side, scroll down to CAPACITOR. Keep in mind the use of capacitors in an audio system. WHY DO PEOPLE BUY CAPACITORS? The number 1 reason would have to be because their lights dim when their system is playing HARD. In car audio, we are told that a capacitor is designed to prevent the voltage drop associated with your lights dimming. The number2 reason is that it is rumored to 'improve' sound quality or 'stiffen' the power supply/source. WHY DO MY LIGHTS DIM? Headlights brightness is in direct proportion to the source voltage. For instance, if your car is running, system voltage is ~12.5 -14.4 VOLTS. Your lights will be much brighter than when your car is turned off--where battery voltage is ~12V. Most car alternators put out between 75 to 120 amps of current. When this current draw threshold of the charging system is exceeded, system voltage will drop as power demands are now shared by the alternator and the storage devices (battery & cap). We are using battery reserves beyond this point until the demand lessens When playing your system really hard. Your lights dim because your alternator can't keep up it's charging voltage (around 13.5V) and therefore, demand exceeds output. When this happens, your electronic devices are dipping into the power storage of the battery. Since the battery stores power at ~ 12-12.5V, there is a 1.3 to 1.8V drop in voltage available. This in turn is why your lights dim down. HOW MUCH POWER DOES A CAPACITOR STORE? 1 Farad = 100 joules or 100W/second 850cca battery = ~2,200,000 farads For storage purposes, you'd need ~2,200 1 Farad capacitors to equal the energy of your battery. Due to its impedence (ESR & ESL), a cap's energy is only 50% available. What's worse, is that in order for a 1 Farad cap to discharge, first the alternator output must have maxed out, and the voltage must have dropped around 1.5 volts. But I thought a cap was supposed to prevent that (voltage drop)!!!!!????? Yep, you got the point. IF A BATTERY = 2,200 CAPS, THEN WHY BUY A (PUNY) CAP? My question exactly. Marketing is the reason why people buy caps. In many cases, upgrading wiring will help your system get the maximum transfer of current. Once that has been reached, adding a capacitor may have a minor effect on your system. 50W over the course of a second is not a lot of power considering an amplifier may draw 2000W to put out 1400 watts. Let's look at the situation from a resources standpoint. Alternator 80 amps Car accessories (minus stereo) 40 amps A large Car Audio system (DRAWS ) ~200 amps AT FULL OUTPUT In this case, you have 240 amps of draw, but only 80 amps of current from the alternator. In your case, you need 160 amps x 12 volts or or let's say 1920 watts of energy. Since a cap stores 50W, how much of a difference do you think it's going to make? A cap is basically a peashooter. W+e need a Howitzer cannon here, to do the job well. Also, Once a cap is discharged, where does it get it's power from? The alternator, which is already overloaded. Once a cap is discharged, it's worthless. Like SWEZ says, ・.The cap already shot its wad, an does limp til recharged・ I知 not so certain I will allow him to babysit my kids, but you get the drift. (I never said it quiet like that... and oh...I'm great with kids!) SO, WHAT IS A CAPACITOR GOOD FOR? 1. Audio Jewelry- impress chicks with large cylindrical shiny thingy 2. Extra weight in winter time 3. A very POOR... BUT expensive distribution block 4. A projectile in the event of a crash 5. Rolling pin--for cooking purposes 6. A neat thing to tell your friend, "..Hey man, lick the top of this.. Please do not try # 6. New hairstyles are always refreshing, but if you are wearing railroad tracks across your teeth, you might have one big filling after it痴 over. HOW CAN CAPACITORS IMPROVE SOUND QUALITY? They can't. Sound quality is not dependant upon the presence of large bulky 1 Farad capacitors. How many 1 Farad Capacitors do you think the Boston Pops, Aerosmith, or Snoop dog use in the recording studio? IN A NUTSHELL....... When Richard, our fearless inventor, became World renown for winning every competition under the sun, people began copying what he did. Soon, every 'serious' competitor had a 'stiffening' capacitor--not to be confused with the 'loosening' capacitor. WHY? In the late 80s, people began sticking out their tongue when dunking the basketball because Michael Jordan did. Did sticking out your tongue improve your dunking ability? Same here with adding a capacitor to your electrical system. STILL A GLUTTON FOR MORE PUNISHMENT? Here's the Original Cap Debate. http://www.carsound.com/ubb/Archives...-1-000307.html Phoenix Gold's marketing guru had just posted information on how their Powercore (basically the Alumapro CAP15 in a Phoenix shell) had both stabilized their voltage and improved the sound quality. Richard called him on it (all in another post) and the marketing geek was unable to quantify any of the conditions that resulted in the voltage being HELD at 14.2V and the 'improved' sound quality. Please do not read every stinking post as valid. There are a lot of people that have had the efficacy of capacitors inbred to their minds, and were not (and still not) convinced in the futility of a 1 Farad storage device. In a final note, Richard relayed a quote regarding battcaps ( www.battcap.net ) as, "..The audio industry is the only place i know of where you can publish specs that show your product is useless and still be able to sell them------and whats worse is that technically ignorant people will argue against the math!!!!!!!..............RC.." when referring to the product. This also relates to most digital readout capacitors, and I wish my Archie Bunker skills could have said it better myself.
  15. See ?!?! Here again, we have two guys who both know more than I do, but who pretty much disagree about the benefit of capacitors ! If the pros can't agree, where does that leave the rest of us ? Hmmmm..... Think I'll go surf the net some more... Peace, Fish
  16. Hey ISO, I did just read that whole thread you posted the link to. Very interesting. Thank you. So, if you, or somebody would please, let me tell you my setup, and you tell me if you think a cap would benefit me {and also, if it could ever hurt anything} I'll be running a single RF Power 1000 5 channel amp. The way I'll be running it, it might put out a peak power of 1400 watts, but more like 1000 watts continuous (lightweight for most of you guys, right ? :-) Then, I had just planned to do the Big 3 upgrade, to my stock F150 alternator, which to the best of my knowledge, puts out about 140 to 150 amps..... Oh, and upgrading to the biggest, fattest battery I can fit in the stock battery compartment (which will be the 4th one from the bottom, on this page: http://www.odysseyfactory.com/battspecs.html It will be labled differently for a BIG cost savings.... but that's a whole other thread) But here's the thing, as much as I understand about caps, I always fall back to the thought of, "What about when I'm playing something with big, long, continuous bass notes, which a lot of my music has" ? Will the cap simply not give me any added benefit then ? .....or will it actually swing the other way, to where it is a negative to my system, under those circumstances ??? And if you think that a cap would benefit me, with my setup, what would be a good size, and the best value for such a capacitor ? Where to buy it ??? Thanks, Fish
  17. Chuckles :-) Who am I to argue ? I just find this subject kind of amusing. I remember I went to one car audio website where they had pinned a whole post, written by one of that's sites respected car audio gurus, explaining why, in scientific detail, caps were useless, and a complete waste of time and money. So, shortly thereafter, I go to another website, where one of the gurus there (in fact, he happened to be one of the moderators) was like 100% pro capacitors, and he had posted and pinned, a big explanation about why capacitors were the shiznit, and why you would be stupid not to include one ! Not wanting to challenge him on his own forum, I sent him a PM with a link to guru from the other forum's post, about why caps were a complete waste of time.... "His reply" ? Please don't post that on our forum ! We would really like that guys post to stay dead and buried...... Which all leads dum-basses like myself to wonder, who TF is really correct ? Tell you guys what, after I get my system all installed, and dialed in, anyone of you guys can buy me a big, fat cap. I'll put it in, and tell you all the results, and we can answer this question once and for all ;-) Peace, Fish
  18. You ever wondered about an Ice Cream truck, with that stupid fucking horn speaker on the roof ? I can hear that shit from 2 blocks away..... and little kids can hear it from 20 blocks ! ;-) LOL So what's up with that ??? Do they get some kind of waiver, or something ? Hmmmm, Fish PS, Been a long time since I got a ticket for a loud stereo (got two of them WAAAY back) This sounds like something fun to look forward to, with my new system. What will really fuck me up, would be, if they pull me over for the stereo.... Then nail me for my dark tinted glass, my license plates being covered.... and what else ? I'm sure they will find something ! Peace, Fish
  19. I drank enough alcohol, as well as plenty of other hardcore drugs 'before I turned 21' (I'm now 44) to last me the rest of my life. Alcohol was one of the worst, but they all suck. Only part of my life I regret. Nowadays, for me, the best freaking high on the planet, is to be on a beautiful lake, on a beautiful Spring day, sticking a big ass bass, and having it rip drag, and do back flips, etc, etc ! Or seeing a 100 plus lb Sturgeon on the end of my line, running for the surface and doing a high jump ! Whoooo Freaking Hoooo ! :-) I LOVE dino-fish :-) {hopefully a couple hours from now ;-) Or maybe standing in Yosemite Valley, on a perfect weather day, trying to take it all in..... These are REAL highs ! Peace, Fish
  20. deeps said > :-)Yea' well anyway.... be safe. Just saw where two more people were hit and killed by drunk drivers yesterday :-( Alcohol fucking sucks ! If I were going to do drugs, I'd smoke pot instead. But that's just me. Peace, Fish
  21. Yea' buddy :-) Now that sounds like a fun experiment :-) Damn I love science ! ....or would that be, biology ? :-) LOL Peace, Fish
  22. Hey B-slaps, you said WTF !?!? 110 lbs is just freaking right ! I got enough fat on me for a whole freaking couple ! I sure don't need no fat ass beeee-otch ! ;-) LOL So you wouldn't hit this 110 lb'er ? :-) Peace, Fish PS, The bigger they are, the more you gotta' feed em :-)
  23. Holy $#!+ !!! Those things look nuclear ! :-) Peace, Fish
