Guest Posted March 27, 2011 Report Posted March 27, 2011 welcome to the forum man! even though you have 2 posts already haha. but yes ideally you would need an amplifier if you were to add a subwoofer(s) to your car. to start off, what kind of subwoofers were you planning on using? model numbers would help greatly here. do you have a box for said subwoofers already? how much are you willing to spend on an amp? do you have an aftermarket headunit installed? do you have all the wires needed to install an amp? if you could answer these questions to the best of your ability, that would help GREATLY.

Do I also need an amplifier and if so do I need a certain type of amplifier? yes you will need an amplifier unless you buy a powered set up. a powered set up will usually be like a regular sub and box setup , but it will say powered meaning it has an internal built in amp. and all you will have to do is run a power,ground,remote and rca's to it. if your set up isn't powered you will need an external amp. as for the type of amp you will need it depends on the subs. if you were running 1 sub you would need a monoblock, or you could bridge a two channel amp. for 2 subs you could get 2 mono blocks or wire the subs in parallel to one amp. but it all depends on how much power you need, how many ohms. and how many ohms your amp can do safely. some amps are only 2 ohm stable where other amps can be dropped to .5 ohms.
