Box Volume and Port Area

Recommended Posts

I always see people say things like "you should go with X cubic feet and X square inches of port." How exactly do you determine what volume and port area to use?

I'm planning on going with two 15" Rockford P1's on 350-400W RMS tuned to about 30 Hz.

Port area depends on the driver, not box size.

But, people use 12-16sqin/cube as a rule of thumb.

Generally if you use those guidelines, your box won't sound like complete ass. At the same time, it may not be optimal.

Enclosure size depends on the driver and amplifier (power) you have.

If you have less power than RMS or the rms, then go with a bigger box.

If you have a ton of power, go with a smaller enclosure.

So smaller box for more power and bigger box for less power? That's kind of counterintuitive. When you say, "less power than RMS," do you mean less power than the RMS rating of the subs, or basically you're underpowering them? As for numbers, what might be a good volume for the setup I mentioned above?

Yes, I meant "underpowering." Do you have the NEW P1s?

I don't have them yet, but I think the ones I was looking at are the older ones rated at 200W rms. http://www.sonicelec...5-09P1S815.html

I just bought my P1s415 from Sonic Electronix for $90... I haven't even built the box yet and Amazon has a blow out... they're $41.41 and free supersaver shipping.

just for the tip you can buy me a second one, I'll give you my address :good: LOL

Damn that's a great deal. Anyone think they'll be able to handle 500W+ RMS (from this amp)? Or should I go with an MB Quart amp? (I was originally going to use the 8 ohm ones to get 320W from the rockford amp. But now I'm thinking I can't pass up $42 per sub.
