Loose coil

Soo I started to hear this metal-hitting-metal kind of noise coming from my sub, took it out of the box and free aired it so I could see/hear where it was coming from and looks like the voice coil is loose from the voice coil former (guess its called that)...and the sub plays fine and sound fine except for that annoyin noise comin from the coil hitting something. I'm wondering is it possible to reattach the coil to the VC former someway? without ripping the whole sub apart...there r some holes I can see the coil..and if it can be reattached, what should I use to attach it? some sort of glue or what?

You played it free air while bottoming it out?

Not a cool thing to do if you ask me, if your hearing metal to metal contact then the last thing you want to is free air it making it worse. Sounds like it may have bottomed out hard once and snapped the spider from the coil, cone from the coil or just totally bent the coil former at the bottom making noise as it moves up and down.

its not bottoming, im 100% sure, and when I free aired, it was on low volume (like 11-15 out of 35). Its not even close to bottoming, pushed the cone with fingers to see how much excursion it needed to bottom out and I cant get even close to bottoming even with max volume I listen to music (24 out of 35). The sub also looks fine everywhere I looked. Also, I've got 2 subs in the same box, why would just the other one bottom out..not saying its not possible but wonderin why would that happen. Oh and when I was free airing the sub and changed the angle, in some angles the noise wasnt so loud or didnt even make the noise..and in some angles the noise was lil louder.

havnt actually pointed that out if its worse on lower notes but I've noted that its not so bad on long bass notes, its worse when theres just bass 'kicks' or whatever u call them, hope u get it

Skullz: it is ported box, both subs share the same chamber, box is tuned at about 37 hz

yea the longer the note the larger the gap becomes in the coil then it resets itself and it happens all over again..

bad news a re-cone kit will fix this but most of the time it happens from distortion to soon or too much and the glue becomes uncured as you could call it.. but it could be other things bro..

u can take the woofer and look around the coil for a breakin in the winding or where on is raised above the others hope this helps

another way to check it is tap all around the cone and dust cap see if you here it then. (slight tap)

Usually metal to metal noise will eventually be the death of the sub, but if you have one that is capable of being re-coned then its just a call away from getting it fixed.
