how to design the optimal enclosure???

first off i know that torres calculator is a great enclosure design program, but what i wanna know is how to design the optimal enclosure for a subwoofer and vehicle on a simple level. i realize its a fairly complex process, ive seen the extensive software that hexibase uses on youtube to design enclosures and im not ready to go that deep into it. im just looking for an explanation as to how much port area, enclosure volume, and sub/port orientation can be figured out. i know theres some experienced box builders on here that could really shed some light on this subject, i understand if you dont want to reveal any/all of your secrets. so help a fellow enthusiast out
