Stee-Z Posted July 19, 2011 Report Posted July 19, 2011 ok i had an old pioneer that i switched out one day for my brother-in-laws JVC, right after i switched it when i turned it up whenever the bass hits it will like skip it and not hit the bass...its weird...., but then i checked my battery...its running at 10.5 V running ..notgood. so i swapped the battery just to see if it was that. i let it run while hooked up and checked it after 10 min. ... still running at around 11V !!!!.. my cd player could play louder without that clippingish noise when i did the big 3, and i can turn it aup a bit more when the cars on. Im thinking maybe my alternator took a crap on me, but its weird because right after i switched cd players it started making that noise when the bass hits... works fine in his car... so im thinking voltage drop. do you think this "clipping" noise (no not refering to actual "clipping" just what it sounds like" could be caused by volatge drop? do you think i need a new alternator? my tool to check if alts are good is getting rebuilt so next week il have it, but wth is my car still starting if my alt would be bad? itrs been doing this for a month since i changed the cd player...my batt should be at 14V, cuz my system aint in yet.. just 4 speakers, and it runs at 11V when eveythings off =( any help?!?! because i want to install my dd 9515 next week, but cant really till this problem is solved!!!! please help! Of course a DMM would help immensely just check the terminals on the batt when the cars on and if it has 14.2v or somewhere close then your alt is fine. If it reads 12v with the car on then I would say the alt might be shot. I was always told another way to test the alt without a DMM is by starting the car, then disconnecting the POS terminal on the battery. If the car stays on, then the alt is good. If the car shuts off, good indication the alt is bad. You really shouldn't be running an amp at 11v... it could severely hurt the amp, subs, and battery. Also, check the ground on the battery if you relocated it or upgraded it. Make sure theres little to no resistance ( can be tested with a DMM ) If you don't have a DMM and your alt fails the test with disconnecting the POS terminal, run up to your local AutoZone or Discount Auto Parts or even Walmart with an auto center and have them run a load test on it, they will check multiple things, first if your battery is good, second they'll test if your alt is good. But if the alt isn't working, starting the car and shutting it off is a sure fire way to kill the battery quick, and kill your starter. But if the alt isn't working, starting the car and shutting it off is a sure fire way to kill the battery quick, and kill your starter. ya its almost HAS to be the alt if its RUNNING at only 11 volts. alts run @ 14.4. and the grinding from your starter could be the solenoid not pushing the starter out all the way and grinding on your flexplate/flywheel. i suggest NOT starting the car anymore than you absolutely have to, put a charger on the batt and get it up in voltage then let it sit, if the battery drops below 12 volts you batt could be going bad too.
toadking90 Posted July 19, 2011 Report Posted July 19, 2011 Alt is dying. Do the battery terminal test. Start it and pull the hot wire off. It will run sluggish but should stay running. If not. Alt gone:(
